Smart's mother was recently diagnosed with bone marrow cancer, but told her son he needs to remain focused on beating the Cavaliers.

Celtics guard Marcus Smart let his emotions get the best of him late in a home playoff loss to the Bulls on Tuesday, and now he's paying for it.

Late in the fourth quarter after missing a 3-pointer, Smart appeared to flip off, point atand shush afan on the sideline. In wake of the incident, the NBA announced Wednesday it levied a $25,000 fine against Smart.

“Obviously, I’ve been told of the gesture,” Celtics coach Brad Stevens said Wednesday during a conference call. “I saw a brief video clip of it but, from my clip, from the angle that I saw, I couldn’t tell. But obviously if he made a gesture, it’s unacceptable and that will be handled by the league.”

It was a frustrating night all around for Celtics players and fans during a111-97loss,dropping Bostonto a 2-0 deficit in the opening-round series.

Game 3 is Friday in Chicago.
