NBA hands down fines, suspensions from Knicks-Grizzlies scuffle

The league has handed down punishments after a scuffle broke out near the end of the Memphis Grizzlies blowout win against the New York Knicks on Wednesday night at Madison Square Garden.

Grizzlies guard Marko Gudurick and forward Jaren Jackson Jr., along with Knicks guard Elfrid Payton, have been suspended for one game. Memphis forward Jae Crowder and Knicks forward Marcus Morris were fined $25,000 and $35,000, respectively, the NBA announced on Thursday night.

Payton and Crowder got into it in the final minute of the Grizzlies 127-106 win after Crowder stole an inbounds pass and brought it back out to the 3-point line to attempt a shot while up 18 points. Payton, clearly unhappy, ran up to Crowder and shoved him to the ground.

Payton, Crowder and Morris were all ejected as a result, and both Knicks guard Damyean Dotson and Grizzlies center Jonas Valanciunas picked up technical fouls. The incident was one of many on Wednesday night, joining a crystal clear “Sell the team!” chant that rang out inside Madison Square Garden and a severe lack of water in the visiting locker room showers that left the Grizzlies stunned.

Morris slammed Crowder after the game, too, saying that “he’s got a lot of female tendencies on the court.” He apologized for his comments within the hour.

“We understand the NBA’s decision to fine and suspend Elfrid Payton as well as fine Marcus Morris Sr. for their behavior during last night’s game,” the Knicks said in a statement. “In addition, we agree that Marcus’ comments were offensive and unacceptable. While we do believe his apology was sincere, that type of speech does not reflect the values of respect and inclusion that our organization stands for, and can not be tolerated.”
