Netflix’s Ripley, Starring Andrew Scott, Gets Release Date and a Moody New Trailer — Watch

The long wait is almost over: Netflix’s Ripley, starring Fleabag alum Andrew Scott as the literary con man, will premiere Thursday, April 4 on the streamer with all eight episodes, TVLine has learned.

Netflix has also released a teaser trailer for the series, which you can watch above, revealing that the entire series is shot in black-and-white (!) and featuring Scott’s Tom Ripley gliding in and out of European high society while pasting his photo into a forged passport. “You’re a very hard man to find,” he’s told, with “no address, phone, office.” He’s confronted by authorities and, at one point, grabs a glass ashtray… with bad intentions on his mind, it seems.

More from TVLine

Scott stars as Tom Ripley, “a grifter scraping by in early 1960s New York” who “is hired by a wealthy man to travel to Italy to try to convince his vagabond son to return home,” per the official description. “Tom’s acceptance of the job is the first step into a complex life of deceit, fraud and murder.” The cast includes Dakota Fanning (as Marge Sherwood), Johnny Flynn (as Dickie Greenleaf) and John Malkovich.

Ripley — which was originally developed by Showtime before moving to Netflix last year — is based on Patricia Highsmith’s bestselling Tom Ripley novels that also inspired the 1999 film The Talented Mr. Ripley, starring Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow and Jude Law. Steven Zaillan (The Night Of) serves as writer and director of all eight episodes.
