It has been years since Colin Kaepernick played an NFL game, yet he remains one of the most talked-about athletes in the world.

Kaepernick’s formative years will be examined in a Netflix show “Colin in Black & White.” According to numerous reports, there will be a six-episode scripted drama from Kaepernick and filmmaker Ava DuVernay.

While he was quarterback of the San Francisco 49ers, Kaepernick took a knee during the national anthem in 2016 to bring attention to police brutality and racial injustice. Other players joined in the movement and Kaepernick became the face of it. That led to NFL teams opting against signing him when he became a free agent in 2017. Kaepernick settled a collusion case against the NFL in 2019.

Colin Kaepernick series will focus on his experiences growing up

Michael Starrbury wrote the series and will offer insight into Kaepernick’s life.

“Too often we see race and Black stories portrayed through a white lens,” Kaepernick said, via the Los Angeles Times. “We seek to give new perspective to the differing realities that Black people face. We explore the racial conflicts I faced as an adopted Black man in a white community, during my high school years. It’s an honor to bring these stories to life in collaboration with Ava for the world to see.”

There has been no release date announced for the series.

Kaepernick has become a hero to many for his unapologetic stance in fighting for equality. He was excluded by the NFL after that, with teams signing dozens of quarterbacks that had far thinner resumes than his.

Kaepernick became one of the most famous athletes in America, even though he has rarely given interviews in the past few years and hasn’t been signed. He continues to work out and help people through his activism.

“With his act of protest, Colin Kaepernick ignited a national conversation about race and justice with far-reaching consequences for football, culture and for him, personally,” DuVernay said. “Colin's story has much to say about identity, sports and the enduring spirit of protest and resilience. I couldn't be happier than to tell this story with the team at Netflix.”
