With season two of Cheer dropping on Netflix just days ago, all fans of the series are asking the same question – who is Maddy Brum? Well, look no further because we've got all of the goss on the rookie top girl and flyer.

Extremely talented and skilled, Maddy's talent can be seen throughout the entirety of the series, but it's her life and story that goes under the microscope in episode three. The third episode, titled 'Dracut Girl' gives viewers a glimpse inside her tough upbringing before rising to prominence as the skilled cheerleader she is today.

She's been cheering since seven

The cheerleading star grew up in Dracut, Massachusetts and at just seven years old she joined her hometown’s squad, the Dracut Pop Warner cheer programme. She attended and graduated from Dracut High School, and it was here that she won four state championships with her school’s cheerleading squad. She then trained at East Celebrity Elite in Tewksbury, Massachusetts.

Her upbringing was difficult

In the programme, viewers find out that Maddy describes her childhood as "tough". With it also coming to light that her family struggled financially while she was growing up, with the family moving around a lot. “I don’t even know how many houses I’ve lived in my life,” she said.

Maddy explained that her mother was once arrested in her school’s parking lot, sharing, "It wasn’t anything bad. She just stole the license plates off someone else’s car."

The show also revealed that when Maddy was younger her father was sent to prison on sexual assault charges, and is now prohibited from leaving the state of Massachusetts.

She signed with Navarro College in 2019

Although Maddy didn't want to leave Massachusetts, it was always her dream to cheer for Navarro, so made the more to Corsicana, Texas. In the first episode of the latest season to drop, Maddy explained that it was difficult to move away from her hometown.

When she signed to Navarro College in 2019, she posted a photo on Instagram where she wrote, "A dream come true... IM A BULLDOG! 😭🐶❤️#newbeginnings #navarro21."

She is a top girl/flyer

Maddy's role in her cheer team is as the top girl (which is also known as the flyer). This role sees her lifted up and thrown into the air, making her the focal point of most stunts.

She's a perfectionist

Described as a perfectionist by her teammates, Maddy wasn't brought up in Texas where cheerleading was a prominent sport – which meant she worked extra hard to make a name for herself. In episode three of season two, Maddy said, "If I didn’t keep pushing myself as a cheerleader, I probably would have never left Massachusetts."

She continued, "I always knew I was gonna go to ECE [East Celebrity Elite] and I always knew I was going to go to cheerleading practice,” she continued. “I don’t know where I’m sleeping tonight, but I know tomorrow at six o’clock, I’m going to cheerleading practice."
