Gary Neville is glad that Erik ten Hag has decided to keep Harry Maguire as Man Utd captain for next season.

Maguire was criticised for a number of poor performances last season with the Red Devils having a disastrous campaign under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and then interim boss Ralf Rangnick.

The England international was poor for much of the season but as skipper his mistakes were highlighted more than others, with calls from some for him to be stripped of the captaincy.

There have been claims that big personalities like Bruno Fernandes and Cristiano Ronaldo hold more sway in the dressing room with rumours that Ten Hag would seek to appoint a new captain on his arrival.

However, that has not been the case with the new Man Utd boss confirming on Monday that he wants Maguire to remain as the Premier League club’s captain.

Ten Hag said in a press conference: “Harry Maguire is the captain. He’s an established captain, he’s achieved a lot of success, so I don’t doubt this issue.”

And Neville reacted to the news on Twitter by saying: “Good!”

Before adding: “So the same United fans fuming with me for applauding the decision to keep Maguire as captain seem to be without knowing criticising the new manager for his decision. Maybe support Maguire and stop bullying him on here (Twitter). The new manager obviously likes him.”

Ten Hag also revealed that Cristiano Ronaldo was “not for sale” despite rumours he wants to leave but former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson reckons Robert Lewandowski might sign for Man Utd if the Portugal international moves on.

“If they lose Ronaldo they are going to lose a lot of goals,” Robinson told Football Insider.

“Somebody like Dybala could go someway to replacing them even though he is not an out-and-out number nine.

“I still have a sneaky feeling about Lewandowski. They are talking about him going to Barcelona but they are struggling to finance it at the moment. The longer that drags on, the more you think it might not come off.

“If Ronaldo leaves, there could be a domino effect. United might take a chance on Lewandowski. He would be the perfect fit for United.

“I know they have signed strikers of a certain age before like [Edinson] Cavani and Ronaldo. I think Lewandowski would be a really good fit at Old Trafford.”
