New Lakers forward Trevor Ariza out at least 8 weeks after undergoing ankle surgery

New Los Angeles Lakers forward Trevor Ariza will be sidelined for at least two months after undergoing surgery on his right ankle, the team announced on Wednesday.

Ariza underwent an arthroscopic debridement procedure on his right ankle on Wednesday, the team said. The 36-year-old will make a full recovery, though doctors won’t re-evaluate him for about eight weeks.

It’s unclear when he’ll be able to take the court for the first time with the Lakers — who will officially open their season in just less than two weeks against the Golden State Warriors.

Ariza has missed most of training camp due to his ankle. At best, he’s likely looking at a return just before Christmas.

Ariza is one of 11 new players the Lakers acquired this offseason. The former UCLA standout is set to enter his 18th season in the league, and his second stint with the Lakers. He’s played for 11 different teams throughout his NBA career — most recently with the Miami Heat last season, where he averaged 9.4 points and 4.8 rebounds in 30 games.
