Jets GM stands by Adam Gase after Jamal Adams’ criticism: ‘I especially believe in coach Gase’

Jamal Adams may not be a fan of New York Jets coach Adam Gase, but general manager Joe Douglas’ support of his coach is as strong as it's ever been..

Just days after Adams ripped Gase’s leadership last week before he was traded to the Seattle Seahawks, Douglas stood by Gase on Monday.

“I especially believe in coach Gase,” Douglas said, via the New York Daily News. “I think he’s the right coach to lead this team.

“Having watched him work last year, having seen him and his staff overcome a 1-7 start and finish the way they did, I feel really good about where we are with him and his leadership.”

Adams, who was perhaps the best player on the Jets last season, had long been pushing for a trade this offseason. He was finally dealt to the Seahawks in exchange for three draft picks and safety Bradley McDougald — a deal that was finalized on Monday.

Adams told the Daily News last week that he hadn’t talked to Gase since his exit interview after last season ended.

“I don’t feel like he’s the right leader for this organization to reach the Promised Land,” Adams said. “As a leader, what really bothers me is that he doesn’t have a relationship with everybody in the building.

“At the end of the day, he doesn’t address the team. If there’s a problem in the locker room, he lets another coach address the team. If we’re playing sh---y and we’re losing, he doesn’t address the entire team as a group at halftime. He’ll walk out of the locker room and let another coach handle it.”

‘Everything I’ve seen has been outstanding’

Gase led the Jets to a 7-9 finish last season, his first with the organization, after a horrendous 1-7 start to the year. He’s compiled a 30-34 overall record throughout his time in the league, having spent three seasons with the Dolphins before jumping to New York, and has just one winning season under his belt.

While Adams may not approve of Gase’s coaching style, Douglas doesn’t have an issue with it.

“I’ve seen Adam [last] year go through a 1-7 start,” Douglas said, via the Daily News. “A coach who never lost patience, who never wavered from his believes, and a guy who would get up and have the tough conversations if he had to with players. And get up and have great communication with the team in team meetings.

“So everything I’ve seen, I’ve witnessed, in my year here with Adam, I’ve been impressed by. Again, I can’t speak for other people. But everything I’ve seen has been outstanding.”
