Newcastle United have already turned their attention to the January transfer window and want to bring in Diogo Costa from Porto, according to a report.

Newcastle spent around £120million to sign four players during the summer. They made Matt Targett’s loan move permanent for £15million, before adding Nick Pope, Sven Botman and Alexander Isak to Eddie Howe’s squad.

Isak is the club’s new record signing as almost half of the £120m summer outlay was spent on him.

He made his Newcastle debut in the recent 2-1 defeat to Liverpool. And the Sweden striker got Magpies fans excited by beating Alisson with a confident finish in the 38th minute.

Howe now has a great squad thanks to Newcastle’s wealthy owners, the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund.

The top Premier League clubs will be starting to fear them. Many are expecting Newcastle to finish in the top 10 this season, before breaking into the European qualification spots over the next few years.

Newcastle chiefs need to be relentless in the transfer market if they are to catch the likes of Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea and Tottenham.

As such, they are already plotting moves for the January window. According to Sport Witness, who cite Portuguese outlet Jornal Do Noticias, Newcastle want to land Porto goalkeeper Costa.

Diogo Costa could challenge Nick Pope

He is a ‘tempting target’ for Premier League teams and Newcastle are among the list of interested parties.

Howe can rely on England international Pope this season following his arrival from Burnley, while Martin Dubravka has gone on loan to Manchester United.

But it seems Newcastle are planning more transfer activity in the keeper department. They sent scouts to watch Costa as he represented Portugal against Spain in June, and continue to hold an interest in him.

The 22-year-old is pushing for a starting spot at the World Cup, despite competition from veteran team-mate Rui Patricio.

Newcastle are reportedly planning to submit a £22m (€25m) offer for Costa once the winter transfer window gets up and running.

His Porto release clause stands at a huge £51.8m (€60m). But the Primeira Liga side are unlikely to hold out for this full fee and could accept Newcastle’s first proposal.

Costa is certainly an exciting talent. He is 22 years old but is already Porto’s number one, as well as part of the Portugal national team.

He could end up following in the footsteps of Matheus Nunes, Darwin Nunez and Joao Palhinha by shining in Portugal before moving to the Premier League.

However, it’s unlikely Newcastle will actually submit a bid for a keeper so soon after landing Pope.

After all, Pope is a great shot-stopper and already has backup in the form of Karl Darlow. Plus, Dubravka’s switch to Man Utd is only a loan, which means he could return to Newcastle next summer.

Howe will probably want the Newcastle hierarchy to focus on other positions in January, rather than capturing another keeper.

Meanwhile, Howe has given his opinion on Newcastle having a goal ruled out in their 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace.
