Newcastle United are on alert after finding out how much it will cost to sign Hakan Calhanoglu, while Inter Milan are eyeing up a Tottenham-linked player as his replacement.
Calhanoglu made the switch few players dare to make in summer 2021 by joining Inter from fierce rivals AC Milan. He signed for Inter on a free transfer following the expiry of his Milan contract.
The central midfielder made 46 appearances during his debut campaign with Inter, registering eight goals and 13 assists.
This helped the Nerazzurri to finish second in Serie A, behind eventual champions Milan, as well as lift the Coppa Italia for the eighth time in their history.
Calhanoglu remains part of Simone Inzaghi’s squad and has featured in seven games so far this term. He opened his account for the season with a goal in the 3-0 league victory over Spezia on August 20.
The Turk penned a three-year contract when joining Inter, which will keep him at the San Siro until June 2024.
However, his spell with the club almost came to an end in the summer. As per InterLive, Newcastle came forward with a proposal to capture him on transfer deadline day.
Liverpool had previously looked at Calhanoglu amid their search for midfield reinforcements. But Newcastle were the only Premier League club to actually make an offer.
Newcastle likely to make new Hakan Calhanoglu approach
Ultimately, the transfer was unsuccessful and he remained in Italy with Inter. But a move is likely to occur next year as club chiefs feels his wages could be better spent on another first-team player.
According to Italian source Calciomercato, Inter are happy to let Calhanoglu leave once the January window gets up and running.
And they will accept bids worth £26million (€30m). Inter feel this is a fair price, even though they didn’t have to spend a single cent when originally landing him.
The Boot Room suggest Newcastle are ready to return for the 28-year-old after failing to sign him during the summer. And the Magpies now know what kind of offer they need to submit to get a deal over the line.
Eddie Howe already has good options in midfield, including Joelinton, Bruno Guimaraes and Joe Willock. He will also be able to use Jonjo Shelvey once the Englishman returns from hamstring surgery.
Despite this, reports continue to put Newcastle in the mix for a midfield signing, which suggests it is an area they are looking to improve.
Inter are hoping to replace Calhanoglu with another star who has been linked with a Prem move. Calciomercato state they are looking at Atalanta’s Ruslan Malinovskyi to succeed him.
Malinovskyi was ‘dreaming’ of a Tottenham transfer in August. He believed it was the right time to take the next step in his career.
The 29-year-old had also entered the final 12 months of his Atalanta deal, which suggested a transfer could take place for a reduced price.
However, Malinovskyi remained with Atalanta. The deadline passed without any late drama surrounding his signature.
Inter are now preparing to make a bid for him, which could see Hakan Calhanoglu end up at St James’ Park.
Meanwhile, Loris Karius says his aim is to push Nick Pope all the way for his Newcastle starting role after joining the Magpies on a short-term deal.
