Newcastle are reportedly in talks with Julian Draxler’s representatives over a move to St James’ Park this summer.
Draxler – who moved to Paris Saint-Germain from Wolfsburg in January 2017 – has made 198 appearances for the French giants, contributing 26 goals and 41 assists.
But the Germany international started just 12 Ligue 1 games last term and is now on new manager Luis Campos’ ‘black list’, according to Le10 Sport, who claim he has been made available for transfer this summer.
Draxler was not included in the PSG squad for their preseason tour of Japan, and the report claims that’s because he has been told he’s surplus to requirements at the Parcs des Princes and should look for a new club.
And Newcastle are said to be interested having failed to persuade Lucas Paqueta to join from Lyon despite an offer of over €40m.
PSG are said to have informed the Magpies that Draxler would be available for €20-30m and it remains to be seen whether the Premier League side would be willing to stump up that much for the 28-year-old, who has two years left on his current deal with the French champions.
But the report claims ‘the file went beyond the simple interest stage’ as Newcastle have not only contacted PSG, but have also held discussions with Draxler’s representatives ‘to present the project and open possible negotiations’.
It’s not yet clear whether Draxler is open to a move to the Magpies but it’s said that ‘ if he closes all the doors that come his way, he will not play at PSG’.
Newcastle have spent close to £60m on new signings this summer, with Sven Botman joining from Lille, Nick Pope making the switch from Burnley and Matt Targett making the permanent move from Aston Villa.
But manager Eddie Howe is said to want to bolster his forward options, and is using new director of football Dan Ashworth’s “invaluable” experience to aid him in the chase of new recuits.
Asked about how the new arrangement with Ashworth works, Howe said: “A ‘step back’ is not quite the right words. I have now got Dan’s experience, which has been invaluable.
“He has made a real impact in all aspects of the club in such a short space of time. He is not just looking at recruitment, he is looking at every aspect of the club from top to bottom, he is trying to use the experience to try to improve what we deliver. I can’t speak highly enough of him as he has been a big help on the transfer front.”
