According to a Dutch analyst, Newcastle United are a “candidate” for Tottenham Hotspur winger Steven Bergwijn “with all the money they have”.

Bergwijn had a spell at Ajax as a youth player but he made his debut in senior football with PSV.

The attacker played 149 times for PSV up until the January transfer window in 2020.

Newcastle have made the best signing of the summer in the anti-Charnley Dan Ashworth

During the 2018/19 campaign, Bergwijn grabbed 15 goals and 13 assists in 41 appearances across all competitions.

The Dutchman joined Tottenham for a fee in the region of £26m in 2020. He has only been a bit-part player for Spurs since this move.

Bergwijn only started four times in the Premier League in 2021/22. He has been linked with a switch to Ajax in recent weeks.

Dutch analyst Aad de Mos has now claimed that Newcastle are also in the running to sign Bergwijn:

“I think Newcastle United, with all the money they have, are also a candidate for him,” De Mos said (via Sport Witness).

“By the way, I also think they are trying to get Georginio Wijnaldum back. They also want to join Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool.

“He is a substitute player at Tottenham, €30m was paid by Tottenham to PSV. Daniel Levy, the chairman, is a very difficult man to negotiate with.

“I think Ajax are divided as to whether to do it or not, and the danger is that you can fall behind the net for the umpteenth time.”

Elsewhere, Newcastle hope to launch their summer recruitment drive within days by completing a permanent deal for full-back Matt Targett.

The 26-year-old Aston Villa defender enjoyed a successful loan spell on Tyneside during the second half of last season and the Magpies are said to be keen to tie up the transfer as soon as possible.

It is understood the move would cost the club a total of £15milion, with the player’s £3million loan fee part of that figure under a framework established during initial talks.

Newcastle are hopeful that the deal could be done this week, but are taking nothing for granted after negotiating a tricky January transfer window during which they pulled the plug on a series of potential signings after failing to reach agreement following protracted discussions.
