Newcastle will go to war with Liverpool and Arsenal for the signing of a Bundesliga forward after a report revealed which two signings Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund want in January.
Newcastle have made huge progress in the last year after being taken over by PIF. They now have massive financial backing and this has allowed them to bring Champions League-level players to the north east.
The likes of Kieran Trippier, Alexander Isak, Sven Botman and Bruno Guimaraes have all had a huge impact on the way Newcastle play and the amount of points they are picking up.
Eddie Howe’s side have won eight of their 15 Premier League games so far, helping them to reach third place. They are ahead of big teams such as Tottenham, Manchester United and Liverpool.
The Magpies need to keep building and improving their squad to help them get to their main aim of European qualification.
Partly, this will involve more big-money signings. But Newcastle’s rich owners also need to be careful not to get in trouble with Financial Fair Play regulations.
This means they need to look at players with expiring contracts, or young stars who shouldn’t cost as much.
According to The Sun, the PIF have two main objectives for Newcastle in January. The first is to sign Marcus Thuram from Borussia Monchengladbach.
Newcastle aiming to win striker battle
The Frenchman is in the final year of his Gladbach deal and this means he could leave on the cheap in January.
Newcastle want to capitalise on the situation by bringing Thuram to St James’ Park. They have the finances to meet his wage demands, while the transfer fee should not be huge because Gladbach are in a weak negotiating position.
Newcastle could soon begin talks with Thuram and his agent to try and get a deal over the line. He would join them to partner Isak up front, while he can also play as a winger on either flank.
Unfortunately for Newcastle, the signing of Thuram will not be straightforward. The report names Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham as other potential suitors.
They all believe the 25-year-old could be a shrewd signing due to his keen eye for goal and contract status.
As a result, Newcastle will have to offer the attacker a lucrative contract to prevent him from joining another English team. And they will have to act fast, too.
Thuram may be followed to Tyneside by an Argentine teenager. The report claims PIF’s second objective for Newcastle is to land 19-year-old Maximo Perrone from Velez Sarsfield.
He is a central midfielder who has won one cap for Argentina U20s.
Newcastle are in talks with Velez over Perrone’s move and have begun the bidding at £12m. Newcastle are hoping this will be enough to get Velez to sell and prevent the starlet from moving elsewhere.
Perrone probably won’t go straight into Howe’s starting eleven. However, he is a player for the future. And signing him now will prevent them from having to spend tends of millions of pounds on a top-quality midfielder in five years’ time.
