Newcastle United have reportedly found out whether they will be able to sign Marco Asensio from Real Madrid after recently making an offer for the 26-year-old.

According to reports from Spain, Newcastle have made a bid of around £20million for Asensio. The winger is in the final 12 months of his Real contract and this means the Spaniards are likely to sell for less than his actual value.

Asensio has only ever played for Mallorca, Espanyol and Real so could be tempted by the prospect of moving to England and featuring in the Premier League.

But according to CaughtOffside, who cite Spanish outlet Diario AS, Asensio will no longer be leaving the Bernabeu this summer.

He has opted to stay at Real, leaving Newcastle disappointed in their transfer chase.

The report claims Asensio has come to the realisation he will get a decent amount of playing time next season. The arrival of Kylian Mbappe, as well as other stars, would have seen him fall down the pecking order.

But the only big names Los Blancos have brought in are central midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni and defender Antonio Rudiger.

This means Asensio is only really facing competition from Rodrygo and Fede Valverde for a spot on the right wing.

Newcastle have other options besides Marco Asensio

Of course, this could change if Real decide to bring in a new wide attacker. But as things stand, Asensio will not be swapping Real for Newcastle.

The Magpies are keen to sign a new striker and winger this summer. Asensio would have been an impressive capture, although there are cheaper options out there.

Recent reports have put Newcastle in the mix for Burnley ace Maxwel Cornet and Watford’s Emmanuel Dennis.

Cornet can play on the left or up front, while Dennis tends to operate as a centre-forward. However, the Watford star can also be selected out wide if needed.

Due to their versatility, Cornet or Dennis could be a better choice for Newcastle to strengthen their forward line. And the fact they are at Championship clubs means they won’t cost as much as Asensio, or demand such large wages.

Newcastle will be frustrated they cannot bring Asensio to St James’ Park. But it is not the end of the world and other players will become available this summer.

Meanwhile, a Newcastle player will spend next season in the second tier after linking up with Sheffield United on loan.
