Newcastle United are seemingly ahead of Arsenal in the race for Leicester City’s Youri Tielemans after reportedly drawing up an offer for him.

Tielemans’ Leicester contract expires next summer and there are no signs of a renewal. The central midfielder knows he is in a good position to leave the Foxes for a bigger team.

Leicester have a huge decision to make on Tielemans. They can sell him in January for a reduced price, potentially around the £25million mark.

Or, they can retain Tielemans’ services for the whole 2022-23 campaign before letting him leave on a free transfer in July.

Either way, Leicester will take a big hit on him. They broke their transfer record to sign Tielemans from Monaco in 2019, with the deal worth around £40m. He remains the most expensive arrival in the club’s history.

To make things worse for Brendan Rodgers’ side, Tielemans was valued at £50m during the height of his form.

Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool have all been linked with the Belgian. In recent months, it has been Arsenal who have pushed hardest to land his signature.

They were tipped to make a move on September 1, transfer deadline day. But these rumours came to nothing and the Gunners instead went after Aston Villa’s Douglas Luiz.

Arsenal made three bids for the Villa star, but none of these resulted in an agreement. Villa were determined to keep hold of Luiz, even though he is in the same boat as Tielemans and has less than 12 months left on his contract there.

Newcastle firmly in Youri Tielemans chase

Due to the failed Luiz pursuit, Arsenal are still in the market for a new midfielder and are casting their eye towards January.

They are likely to reignite their interest in Tielemans, but Newcastle could pose a big threat.

According to French outlet Jeunes Footeux, Newcastle have moved ahead of Arsenal in proceedings as they are planning to bid for the 25-year-old as soon as the window reopens.

Their offer will come in at £17.3m (€20m). Clearly, this is far lower than Tielemans’ full value. Leicester have little choice but to accept such a proposal though due to the star’s contract situation.

As such, the report claims Newcastle’s bid will be ‘hard to refuse’ for Leicester. This sets up the possibility of him moving to St James’ Park early next year.

Newcastle are already starting to apply some ‘pressure’ on Leicester to sell. It looks like they really mean business.

Arsenal now need to decide on who is their top midfield target. They have been looking into a Tielemans move for a while but have never actually made an approach.

Tielemans remains on their shortlist, as does Luiz. But they are more likely to succeed and bring a midfielder in by just setting their sights on one star.

Despite Newcastle’s push for Youri Tielemans, there is one key factor which could see him go to Arsenal instead.

Mikel Arteta’s side are playing in this season’s Europa League and are also top of the Premier League as things stand. Should they win the UEL, or finish in the Prem’s top four, then they will qualify for next season’s Champions League.

One of Tielemans’ main goals is to play in Europe’s premier club competition. So if Arsenal make the UCL and Newcastle don’t, then the player could end up in north London.

A midfield alternative for Newcastle is Hakan Calhanoglu, and they have just found out how much he will cost.
