Newcastle ‘enquire’ about key Man Utd target who is shining in Serie A; Ten Hag won’t be happy
Newcastle have reportedly ‘enquired’ about the possibility of signing Inter Milan right-back Denzel Dumfries this summer, who is also on the radar of Manchester United.
The 27-year-old has shone in Serie A this season and has attracted the interest of several top clubs. Also, Inter could be forced to sell him due to their ongoing financial issues.
Kieran Trippier has been fantastic in the right-back role for Newcastle this term. But, if these reports are to be believed, it seems Eddie Howe could be looking for a long-term replacement.
Indeed, the Magpies are absolutely flying and currently sit in third place in the Premier League table.
As a result, they will almost certainly be playing in the Champions League next term, for the first time since 2003.
Tripper has played a key role in Newcastle’s success, too, making 33 Premier League appearances so far. In the process, the England international has scored one goal and made six assists.
Nevertheless, it seems Howe is keen on freshening up the right-back position, by making a summer move for Dumfries.
That is according to Gazzetta dello Sport, as cited by Sport Witness, who claim Inter could be willing to cash in on Dumfries this summer due to their need to sell players.
They note that Newcastle have ‘made an enquiry’ about the right-back, who, as mentioned, has done well in the Italy recently.
This season, the defender has made 29 league appearances for Inter, scoring one goal and making six assists – exactly the same as Trippier’s return.
A solid, strong and quick defender who can also offer a lot going forward, it’s no surprise to see Howe targeting a move for Dumfries.
He also caught the eye playing for the Netherlands in the World Cup last year – where he helped the Oranges reach the quarter-finals.
However, as previously reported by Football365, Man Utd are also interested in Dumfries. Therefore, Newcastle could face competition for his signature.
Erik ten Hag has allegedly made signing a new right-back one of his top priorities, with the future of Aaron Wan-Bissaka currently in doubt.
The manager is thought to have a number of high-profile names on his transfer shortlist – but Dumfries is believed to be right at the top.
From Dumfries’ point of view, if given the choice between the two Premier League teams, it’s not an easy call.
Man Utd are, of course, the bigger club, and along with Newcastle will be in the Champions League next season (barring something ridiculous happening).
However, Howe’s Magpies are very much a club on the up and given their financial backing, should be in and around the top of the Premier League for years to come.
With that in mind, if both Man Utd and Newcastle submit concrete offers for Dumfries this summer, it will be interesting to see who comes out on top.
