Newcastle United are reportedly keen on signing Inter Milan midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu, to cap off their transfer dealings this summer.

Newcastle have made a few shrewd additions to their squad this summer. They have made four permanent additions to their squad to this point.

Alexander Isak was their statement signing, and Nick Pope, Matt Targett and Sven Botman all seem good pickups.

Indeed, the summer window has seen the Magpies be quieter than expected. After the club were taken over by vastly rich owners during last season, fans could be forgiven for assuming they would add a host of players.

They are potentially still in the market for more signings before the window is up, though.

Inter attacking-midfielder Calhanoglu was linked with the club in June. Reports at the time stated the Serie A side were confident of keeping hold of some major assets if they offloaded him.

However, there have been very few outgoing transfers at Inter this summer. Still, Newcastle are said to remain interested in the Turkish international.

Interlive reports that the Magpies could still hold an interest.

Given Inter have not offloaded anybody this window, a transfer for Calhanoglu could bear fruit, following previous reports.

However, the report states the pursuit could be complicated, given the window closes in a couple of days. Indeed, that may be the case, as it does not seem contact has been made yet.

Calhanoglu could boost Magpies

Signing Calhanoglu could offer Newcastle’s squad a boost. They have already started the season in good form, and are currently seventh in the league.

However, adding more quality should allow them to solidify their position in the top half. Calhanoglu is clearly a good player – he contributed to 20 league goals for Inter last season.

In fact, he has not failed to contribute to at least 10 goals in Serie A in any of the last three seasons. What’s more, the fact he can play in multiple positions – attacking midfield and on the wings – makes him a quality asset.

Adding him into the mix could allow Newcastle to rest and rotate more often, while remaining with top quality players on the field. It should also get the best out of the other players in his position, as they would fight to retain their places in the side.
