Newcastle handed massive lift in chase for top left-back cast aside by rival Premier League club
Newcastle have seemingly been handed a big lift in their bid to land a top-quality left-back this summer, with the player’s current club reportedly ready to do business.
Toon boss Eddie Howe wants to strengthen his starting XI further with the likely addition of three or four more quality names in the summer window, with the club still in the mix to qualify for the Champions League.
Left-back is one position that Howe wants more competition for, despite Dan Burn doing a decent job in that role.
And Arsenal star Kieran Tierney is the player very much on Newcastle’s radar after his struggles for game time at The Emirates.
The Gunners are planning a big spend of their own in the summer as they are determined to build on their success this season. However, there will almost certainly need to be some exits first, with Tierney well in that mix.
It was reported last month that the Magpies were keeping an eye on the Scotland international’s situation.
And with Arsenal ready to spend big on a midfielder, namely Declan Rice, they will need to recoup significant funds from sales first.
Tierney has been forced out of the side by summer signing Aleksandr Zinchenko, whose ability to move into midfield out of possession has made him a valuable asset to Mikel Arteta.
The 25-year-old Scot has only started four times in the Premier League this season, although he has made 26 appearances in total.
Tierney to set Newcastle back £30m
And with Tierney seemingly over the injury issues that have blighted his Gunners career so far, the full-back could end up being a real coup for Newcastle.
The former Celtic star is valued around the £30million mark but is not the only left-back on Howe’s radar.
The report on Football Insider claims that Fulham star Antonee Robinson is also being watched, although Manchester City are also keen on the Cottagers star.
But despite Newcastle’s interest in bringing in a new left-back, Burn is also being lined up for a new contract. Howe loves the player’s versatility and experience and wants to reward him for his performances.
However, bringing in a more attacking left-back to compliment Kieran Trippier on the right is one of Howe’s main priorities – and turning to north London to find that players now appears the likeliest option.
Newcastle are back in action on Saturday when they head to Manchester City in the Premier League.
