Newcastle United have joined the race to sign Armando Broja from Chelsea after his Southampton loan spell, according to a report.

Broja has been spending the 2021-22 season on loan at Southampton from Chelsea. It has been a breakout campaign for him in the Premier League. From 38 appearances in all competitions, he has scored nine goals.

Those are not outstanding figures just yet, but the fact he has been able to build up regular gametime is a strong step in the right direction. As such, he has been attracting interest from various clubs.

Napoli have looked at taking him to Serie A, for example. But there are plenty of options for the Slough-born striker in the Premier League still.

According to Goal, three English clubs are interested in signing him from Chelsea, as long as a takeover of the Blues goes through in time for them to oversee transfers in the summer.

First, Southampton would like to keep Broja at St Mary’s Stadium on a permanent basis.

Alternatively, Broja could make a cross-London move from Chelsea to West Ham, who remain in the market for a new striker to support Michail Antonio and have already been listed as a suitor for the Albania international.

But Goal also add Newcastle into the mix, which appears to be a fresh link.

Newcastle signed Chris Wood to strengthen their attack in January. However, ahead of their first summer with Saudi owners, they want another, younger striker.

At the age of 20, Broja has plenty of room for development and could fit within their strategy.

In addition, Goal confirm Napoli remain interested in Broja, but are not the only Italian suitors. AC Milan and Inter are also in contention for his transfer.

First, Chelsea will have to make a decision about whether to reintegrate Broja or cash in on their academy product.

Armando Broja should consider permanent Chelsea exit

Although Broja has had a productive season, returning to Chelsea may not be the best option for either party.

Yes, the Blues have had their issues up front this season; Romelu Lukaku has struggled to hit the heights expected of him since his return to the club. But Broja would not necessarily be the answer for a club of their level.

He has shown promise, though, so could be a good investment for one of the clubs outside the Premier League’s so-called big six.

Clubs like Newcastle, West Ham and Southampton are all seeking to grow. Indeed, the Hammers have qualified for Europe for two seasons in a row now.

They and Newcastle have a need for a new striker, while Southampton would have a void to fill if they weren’t able to keep Broja.

His best option may therefore be to pick one of the three Premier League admirers. In turn, Chelsea could get a decent sum of money for the young prospect.
