Newcastle are in formal talks with Everton over a move to sign Chelsea target Anthony Gordon, and a report has revealed the bizarre sum the rudderless Toffees could accept for their homegrown talisman.
It’s fair to say Everton are in something of a crisis right now. They’re managerless after sacking Frank Lampard on Monday night following a dreadful run of one win in 14.
Fan discontent is at an all-time high, while the Athletic suggested the club’s decision-makers aren’t on the same page regarding who should succeed Lampard.
Majority owner Farhad Moshiri reportedly favours ex-Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa. Other senior members among the club’s hierarchy favour former boss Sam Allardyce who’d no doubt be a wildly unpopular choice.
Elsewhere, Everton are poised to see their loan move for Villarreal’s Arnaut Danjuma hijacked by Tottenham.
The Dutch international had passed an Everton medical over the weekend and even performed early media duties for the club. However, Fabrizio Romano was among a host of trusted sources to report Danjuma will now sign on the dotted line for Spurs.
The bad news doesn’t end there, however, with the Daily Mail now reporting Newcastle are in formal talks to sign Anthony Gordon.
The 21-year-old has been a rare bright spark at Goodison Park over the last 18 months. He’s struggled over the winter months, though is far from being alone among the Everton squad in that regard.
Everton already lack for firepower and losing Gordon would be another step towards relegation. But per the Mail, that’s what could be about to transpire.
What’s more, Everton might even accept a bid nowhere close to their full valuation of the player.
Everton could accept just £40m (including future add-ons) for Gordon
It’s claimed Everton value Gordon around the £60m mark. Indeed, that is the figure they quoted Chelsea when the Blues came calling last summer.
However, the report notes sources close to the situation claim a reduced package worth just £25m and £15m in add-ons ‘could see an agreement reached’.
The very nature of add-ons likely means Everton wouldn’t see a penny of that extra £15m until at least the summer. As such, if selling Gordon for that amount this month, they’d only receive £25m to reinvest in vital new recruits.
Newcastle’s move will alert Chelsea who it’s claimed would be willing to loan Gordon back to Everton for the remainder of the season if he agrees a Stamford Bridge switch.
However, that’s not necessarily all that important given it’s claimed Gordon would likely prefer a ‘clean break’ from his boyhood club is he does depart anyway.
It’s acknowledged Chelsea can blow Newcastle out of the water financially if they so desire. Whether they’ll do so remains to be seen given they’ve already signed three forwards this month anyway – Joao Felix, Mykhailo Mudryk and Noni Madueke.
Gordon is termed Newcastle’s ‘top domestic target’, though they’ll walk away from the deal if the finances don’t make sense.
In that scenario, the piece’s author, Craig Hope, added on Twitter the Magpies are ‘also speaking to several European clubs over attacking targets’.
Romano subsequently stressed Flamengo’s Matheus Franca remains in Howe’s sights. Newcastle have seen a €16m bid rejected by the Brazilian side, but ‘talks continue’.
