Newcastle United have reportedly opened preliminary talks to secure the signing of Barcelona forward Memphis Depay on loan this month.
The Netherlands international has fallen out of favour under Xavi at the Nou Camp, with the likes of Robert Lewandowski, Ousmane Dembele, Raphinha, Ansu Fati, and Ferran Torres all ahead of him in the attacking stakes.
The 28-year-old has also been unfortunate with injuries during his time in Catalonia and has only made four appearances all season.
It’s reported that before the arrival of Lewandowski and Raphinha, Depay would not have entertained leaving. But now, according to Football Insider, he is open to the idea.
Atletico Madrid remain keen on striking a deal after allowing Joao Felix to join Chelsea. Meanwhile, Depay’s former club PSV are also interested in a potential return.
It had initially looked as if a switch to Inter was on the cards, but that was quickly shot down. And it now appears that Newcastle are ready to offer the former Manchester United forward an escape route.
Depay lasted just over a season at Old Trafford, scoring seven goals in 53 games and was considered a flop.
To that end, he will feel he has unfinished business, if he does find himself back in the Premier League.
Howe looking to build Champions League squad
Eddie Howe is keen to bolster his forward line this month in order to consolidate the club’s top-four position.
Chelsea forward Christian Pulisic had looked to be bound for St James’ Park before picking up an injury, which now opens the door for Depay.
Football Insider adds that the deal is likely to be a loan until the end of the season. That will then lead to Depay being out of contract in the summer, so Barca may prefer a sale for a relatively low fee.
That is where PSV might hold an advantage, as they are looking for a straight replacement for Cody Gakpo.
Either way, Depay’s time in Barcelona looks done and dusted – it just remains to be seen where he will end up.
Newcastle are back in action on Saturday when they head to Crystal Palace in the Premier League.
