Newcastle are reportedly keen on raiding Palmeiras for bright young talent Giovani, but a failed £10million Ajax bid has exposed his true fee.

The Magpies’ transfer window has proved a tale of two halves so far, with the second half proving frustrating. Deals for Nick Pope and Sven Botman and a permanent move for Matt Targett got them off to a flying start.

But as the focus has turned to fresh attacking reinforcements, hopes of additions have dried up.

Newcastle have targeted several players including Hugo Ekitike, Alexander Isak and Moussa Diaby. However, they have endured frustration after frustration in trying to tie up a signing.

As a result, ESPN Brazil reports that Eddie Howe’s side are now turning their attentions to Palmeiras starlet Giovani.

The 18-year-old broke through to the Palmeiras first team in January and has flirted with senior action for the Brazilian club.

By and large, though, he has continued to impress at Under-20 level. Indeed, Giovani scored four goals and assisted three others in the Sao Paulo Junior Football Cup as his side went all the way and triumphed.

The teenager netted his goals in the quarter-finals, the semi-finals and the final to prove a driving force in their success.

Newcastle learn Giovani transfer fate

Ajax, who have built up a reputation of developing some of the world’s finest young talents, have eyed a deal.

However, Palmeiras knocked back the Eredivisie giants’ initial €12million (£10million) offer.

Bayer Leverkusen have now also joined the hunt as they look to attract Giovani to the Bundesliga. The German top flight is also a home for many blossoming young players.

ESPN Brazil adds that either of the three clubs could make another move soon. Palmeiras, though want a premium price for one of the club’s ‘greatest gems’ – his €60million (£50million) release clause.

Magpies need senior signing

Giovani would definitely be a signing for the future for Newcastle, but they need ready-made goalscorers in now.

The 18-year-old would fit into the model the Magpies are trying to create. They want a hub for some of the world’s best talents to thrive and see a path to first-team football, backed by serious investment.

But the immediate priority for Newcastle is pushing on from last season’s strong finish.

As it stands, they could do with a goalscorer who can come in and offer them a focal point up top right away.

But as the summer transfer window drags on, it remains unclear who they will turn to. In the end, they may have to pay premium fees.
