Newcastle United are preparing a new offer for Anthony Gordon that will come closer to Everton’s asking price, according to reports.

Things have become a bit frustrating for Newcastle in the transfer window recently. Despite the vast wealth of their owners, they have not made a signing for over six weeks. They have started the new season unbeaten, but still want to strengthen their squad.

For example, it remains on their agenda to add another attacking player. It could be a centre-forward, winger or attacking midfielder.

They missed out on Hugo Ekitike, who was a long-term target, to Paris Saint-Germain, while they have also been frustrated in their pursuits of Leicester City midfielder, James Maddison, and Leeds United winger, Jack Harrison.

Someone else they have been looking at is Everton winger, Gordon. When their interest was reported last month, though, Newcastle were short of their fellow Premier League side’s valuation.

According to Football Insider, though, Newcastle are now ready to make a fresh attempt to sign Gordon. After having a £35million offer rejected in the past, they will be going closer to the £40million benchmark Everton have set.

However, the Toffees are also in their own negotiations for Gordon. They would ideally like him to extend his contract, which is due to expire in 2025.

But Newcastle are trying to tempt them into a sale, which could be cause for concern at Goodison Park. Everton have lost their first two games of the season, so would not want to be deprived of a key player.

This summer, though, has been about balancing the books. It prompted the big-money sale of Richarlison to Tottenham Hotspur, for example. The Brazilian may not be the only sacrifice they have to make before the window shuts on September 1.

Anthony Gordon important for Everton future

Gordon’s record for Everton so far reads 62 appearances, four goals and eight assists. Still only 21 years old, he has been identified as a player with high potential.

Everton have given him the number 10 jersey for the current season. It remains to be seen how much longer he will spend wearing it.

His importance to them is currently high after Richarlison’s sale and Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s injury issues. Gordon has become an important member of their attack and started up front against Aston Villa on Saturday.

Perhaps until Everton can make an attacking signing of their own, they would be best off keeping Gordon. Dwight McNeil arrived earlier in the summer and should be a good signing. But they need more players who can operate centrally.

Gordon is learning that trade as well, despite naturally playing from the left-hand side. Hence, Everton will be eager to keep hold of him, despite Newcastle upping the pressure.
