Newcastle have ‘formulated an official offer’ to sign Leeds United winger Jack Harrison, though its nature is likely to irk Jesse Marsch’s side.

Harrison 25, has been a mainstay at Elland Road for four years. The first three of his stint in west Yorkshire were on loan from Man City before Leeds finally captured their man on a permanent basis last summer.

Harrison bagged eight league goals in each of Leeds’ two campaigns back in the top flight. Any doubts as to whether he’d make the grade at elite level have been firmly put to bed.

The Whites’ forward line will have a new look next season with Raphinha now in Barcelona. Luis Sinisterra has replaced the Brazilian, though operates primarily on the left wing.

That will push Harrison onto the right where he’ll compete with Daniel James. It is not inconceivable Harrison may spend more time on the bench next season than he’s accustomed to.

Either that, or he may be redeployed at left wing-back – a position he is being trialled in during pre-season.

That may be something that has given Newcastle hope of pulling off an in-Premier League raid. Indeed, the Magpies were reported by the Daily Mail to be weighing up a £20m bid.

Now, however, news from Italy suggests an official bid of greater value has been formulated. Though given Leeds’ stance and Marsch’s recent comments, it’s unlikely to bear fruit.

Jack Harrison bid readied

TuttoMercatoWeb state Newcastle have ‘formulated an official offer’ worth £23.8m. That is still some way short of Leeds’ £35m asking price.

Yet even if a bid worth £35m were lodged it’s not a guarantee Leeds would sell.

Indeed, when probed on the Harrison speculation, Marsch recently said: “There’s always been interest in Jack but I know he’s happy here. For me Jack is a big part of plans moving forward.”

An Italian outlet claiming to have insider information on a transfer between two Premier League clubs may sound strange.

However, the Italian media have taken great interest in Newcastle’s business of late, especially after Eddie Howe’s side snatched Sven Botman from under the nose of Serie A champions AC Milan.

Leeds unlikely to sell

If Leeds were to sell it’d likely necessitate another trip into the market to buy a direct replacement. With the new season only a fortnight away, that is a risk and disruption Leeds can well do without.

They remain on the hunt for another forward with the Charles De Ketelaere saga rumbling on. However, the targets their sizing up play centrally, meaning Harrison will still have an important role to play.

What’s more, Harrison offers versatility being capable of playing on either flank. His pre-season exploits in a deeper role are further evidence of his usefulness.

In this case at least, it appears Newcastle are barking up the wrong tree.
