Newcastle thwarted by Fenerbahce

Newcastle were denied victory in a pre-season friendly with Fenerbahce at the death by Cristian Baroni, drawing 1-1 in Austria.

The Magpies looked to have scored the winner late in the second half through Algerian teenager Mehdi Abeid, but the Turkish side equalised in stoppage time through the Brazilian midfielder.

Fenerbahce were the better side in the first half, with Alex and Cristian both wasting good chances to open the scoring.

Newcastle came back into the contest in the second half, and as substitutions disrupted the ebb and flow of the game, they started to come out on top.

Sammy Ameobi and Papiss Cisse came close, until Abeid broke the deadlock moments after coming off the bench 12 minutes from time.

The former Lens trainee produced a clever turn and shot to slot the ball past Fenerbahce goalkeeper  Mert Gunok.

Cristian finally got his goal though, when he drilled in a low drive past Newcastle goalkeeper Rob Elliot at his near post.

The Magpies continue their preparations for the Premier League season with a trip to the Algarve, where they play Olympiakos and Braga.

Elsewhere, First-half goals from Nicky Maynard and Mark Noble saw West Ham to a 2-1 pre-season victory at Colchester.

Maynard broke up play in midfield in the 16th minute before latching on to Carlton Cole's knockdown to finish the move.

The former Bristol City forward caused problems once more when John-Joe O'Toole brought him down in the area for Mark Noble to convert after the half hour.

Anthony Wordsworth converted O'Toole's low cross to give the U's hope before half-time, but they could not extend the Premier League new boys any further.

Norwich went down 3-2 to Hertha Berlin in an entertaining clash in the Austrian town of Gleisdorf.

Elias Kachunga scored twice to give the Germans a 2-0 cushion at the interval.

James Vaughan pulled a goal back, but Kachunga sealed his hat-trick with a penalty, only for Vaughan to grab his second of the game with a flicked header.
