Real Socidead striker Alexander Isak has put a potential Newcastle transfer in major doubt due to his concerns about the club’s new ownership.

The Magpies have bolstered their goalkeeper ranks and back line and are subsequently focusing on adding to their attack. A new striker is a key priority for manager Eddie Howe and he in fact reportedly wants two signings on that front.

A host of names have emerged on Newcastle’s radar. However, deals for the likes of Moussa Diaby now look unlikely.

Reports on Tuesday therefore claimed that Sociedad’s Sweden international Isak is now the new firm Newcastle target.

Club chiefs are aware that he would be a record arrival at St James’ Park. But they hoped for a structured deal involving a down payment this summer and the rest next year.

But despite Newcastle’s hopes of signing Isak, the player’s stance has now put any deal in doubt.

Indeed, Mundo Deportivo claims that the player has concerns over Newcastle’s plan to build their team ‘at the stroke of a chequebook’.

Newcastle secured a massive takeover from a consortium led by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) in October last year.

They broke their transfer record for Lyon midfielder Bruno Guimaraes in January. And now they want to top that £42million deal with a move for Isak. According to the reports on Tuesday, the Swede would cost £50million-plus.

Alexander Isak wants Real Sociedad stay

While the striker has a €90million (£76million) release clause – the ‘largest’ in the Socidedad squad according to Mundo Deportivo – his 10 goals last term mean the La Liga side will accept less.

However, Isak feels happy at Sociedad. The 22-year-old has a contract until 2026 and can look forward to Europa League football next season – something Newcastle cannot offer.

The goalscorer’s confidants will further persuade him to stay at Sociedad this summer to advance his career.

The Spanish side consequently have ‘firm’ confidence that they can keep Isak.

Newcastle may struggle this summer

The report from The Telegraph initially detailing Newcastle’s interest in Isak claimed the club are struggling to sign their targets.

They have made three signings already this summer but have set a strict budget.

And the Isak deal could take up most, if not all, of those remaining funds. Indeed, PIF are reportedly looking to put a cap on their spending.

But the Isak deal looked like one which could go ahead, unaffected in the grand scheme of things by the fee.

Unlike with £60million-rated Diaby, though, it is now the player – Isak this time – who is driving the doubt over the move to St James’ Park.
