Newcastle United have received encouragement in their bid to strengthen their squad following reports of an enquiry made to Real Betis for Nabil Fekir.

The Magpies are looking to add more quality and depth this summer as Eddie Howe looks to steer the club into the upper echelons of the Premier League. Indeed, an influx of players in January helped the club pull away from relegation towards mid-table security. But the challenge of helping Newcastle to mix it with the big boys will not be an easy step to take.

That said, the club has made a steady start to the summer window. Matt Targett’s move has been made permanent, while the signing of Nick Pope and Sven Botman seriously strengthens their rearguard.

However, it is in the attacking positions where Dan Ashworth is now focused on strengthening.

Indeed, Newcastle’s sporting director seemingly has two positions in mind: a striker and an attacking midfielder.

As far as a striker goes, links to Armando Broja and Benjamin Sesko continue to do the rounds. More realitically, perhaps, the Magpies are also looking at Strasbourg’s Ludovic Ajorque.

In terms of signing a new No 10, Ashworth is reportedly looking to PSG and their forgotten star Julian Draxler.

However, a new option could be about to open up in the form of Fekir, if reports from Spain are to be believed.

As per Fijachés, the Magpies have made contact with Real Betis to see if they would be willing to sell.

And it seems they have received encouragement, with reports claiming the LaLiga side are willing to discuss a sale for a fee of around £37.6m (€45m).

As such, they claim Newcastle are now considering whether to follow that up with a firm offer for the Frenchman.

Nabil Fekir a top talent

That appears a pretty steep fee for a 29-year-old, though there is no doubting his quality.

Fekir has scored 22 times in 118 appearances for Betis, adding 19 assists in the process. That amounts to a goal contribution every 2.8 appearances.

As such, he is rightly regarded as the club’s crown jewel and one of the leading stars of LaLiga outside the usual top three sides.

The 29-year-old has been with Real Betis since 2019, signing in a deal worth around £26.5m after add-ons.

Once on the brink of a move to Liverpool, Fekir was rewarded with a new deal back in January. That ties him to the Andalucian club until summer 2026.

However, with funds tight at Los Verdiblancos, a big offer could tempt them to do business.

They could use the money for team strengthening and they would reportedly use his sale to strengthen their own squad.

As such, if Newcastle match their valuation, then Fekir could finally get that long-awaited Premier League switch.

Newcastle, meanwhile, have been branded ‘stupid’ by one pundit amid claims they are considering a move for Timo Werner.
