Newcastle United are rumoured to be vying for the transfer of 21-year-old striker Gamid Agalarov to bolster their attacking options.

The Russian currently plays in the top flight of football in his native country for Ufa and has bagged 18 goals so far this season. Ufa aren’t one of the big teams in the league so the player may not carry a hefty price tag.

This is according to Sport24 who claim that Eddie Howe’s team were actively interested in acquiring Agalarov’s services during the January transfer window.

A bid, however, never came to fruition. But the Magpies are rumoured to be interested yet again.

The striker has many similar qualities to Hugo Ekitike, whom Newcastle have been heavily linked with since January. The Magpies even went as far as making a bid of £25million, rising to £33million which was reportedly accepted.

The deal did not go through in the end as Ekitike and his agent had some reservations about Newcastle’s project. His agent even said that there was no “short or medium-term plan” in place.

“We were not convinced about the sports project and we saw no short or medium-term plan with their approach,” said Ekitike’s agent to French outlet L’Equipe.

“Hugo has achieved great things in just six months but as he is attached to the club, we agreed with the leaders to end the season with Reims.”

Beyond then, Newcastle may still have to look at alternatives, which is where Agalarov could come in.

Agalarov is currently in his first season of top-flight football and is outperforming all pre-season expectations. The 21-year-old is the highest scorer in the league, seven goals ahead of seasoned striker Artem Dzyuba.

There will be some eyebrows raised if Newcastle do sign Agalarov, however, as there is a significant difference between the qualities of the Russian Premier League and the top flight of England.

The likelihood of Agalarov moving

Ufa president Shamil Gazizov has has his say on the chances of Agalarov exiting the club this summer.

“It is in our prerogative that Hamid Agalarov progresses in another league. There is interest from European countries,” said Gazizov to Vedomsti Sport.

“It all depends on many factors that are beyond our control.

“Any offers? In January, there was interest from Premier League clubs.

“A player who scores 18 goals in an ‘outsider team’ is a unique case. All the scouts are following him. But now Hamid is only thinking about how to help Ufa keep a place in the RPL.”

Ufa seem willing to allow the striker to leave and understand that they have little control if the striker wants to leave the club.

How would he fair in the Premier League?

This is the Russian’s first season in top-flight football. He has taken his chance by surpassing 15 goals.

As he is only 21, he has the room to develop into an even better player. For now, however, he doesn’t seem ready for a move to the Premier League just yet.

The attacker would stand a much better chance to be a threat in the Premier League in future if he stayed at Ufa or transferred to one of Europe’s less-renowned leagues.

Agalarov’s father, however, believes his son “has qualities” to perform well in the league.

“Shamil Gazizov knows what he is talking about,” Agalarov’s father said to Bombadir.

“Is Hamid capable of playing in the Premier League or another European league? He has qualities.

“I won’t reveal a secret by saying that young players always dream of playing in a good league. This is normal.”

The attacker seems to have a bright future ahead of him, although the timing may be a bit too soon for him to fulfil his potential.
