Newcastle United missed the chance to move up to seventh place after conceding a late goal in a 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace.

Marc Guehi put through his own net to give Newcastle the lead in the 53rd minute, following a well-worked free-kick, but Daniel Munoz's header secured Crystal Palace a deserved point right at the death at Selhurst Park.

Here are five things we learned from the game.

Crystal Palace strike hammer blow at the death

There have been few certainties in this rollercoaster campaign but when Newcastle go in front, the Magpies have tended to get over the line. In fact, before this game, only Newcastle and league leaders Liverpool had yet to drop a point from winning positions this season. However, Newcastle could not see this one out.

Crystal Palace were not about to roll over after going behind and the Eagles came roaring back as Newcastle went into protection mode. Marc Guehi, keen to make amends for his own goal, launched the ball forward and found Ismaila Sarr inside the box just after the hour mark and Nick Pope made a huge save to deny the Crystal Palace danger man with his shoulder. The ball fell to Daniel Munoz, who wasted a glorious opportunity in the first half, but the Colombia international's effort was blocked by Dan Burn, who prevented a certain goal.

Defensive partner Fabian Schar then made a crucial challenge in the 70th minute just as Sarr was about to pull the trigger inside the box before Pope denied the Crystal Palace forward a few minutes later. Crystal Palace were turning the screw and the hosts finally equalised in stoppage time when Guehi's cross was headed in by Munoz at the back post to stun Newcastle.

That was the cue for wild celebrations from the hosts. Newcastle players, in contrast, could not hide their anguish. Harvey Barnes doubled over. Tino Livramento dropped to his knees. Bruno Guimaraes covered his face. Lewis Hall and Sandro Tonali had their hands on their heads. They all knew two points had been thrown away.

Marc Guehi offers up a gift

Marc Guehi may not have been wearing a Newcastle shirt on Saturday, but the Crystal Palace captain ended up doing his suitors a huge favour in the second half. Newcastle were looking bereft of ideas, after failing to have a single shot in the first half of a Premier League game for only the second time in a decade, but the Magpies broke the deadlock following a fabulous set-piece routine straight from the training ground in the 53rd minute.

Lewis Hall shaped to swing the ball into the box, but instead played it along the floor to Sandro Tonali. The Italy international hit a clever first-time pass to Anthony Gordon, whose teasing cross was inadvertently turned into the net by Guehi. It felt like a massive goal for Newcastle - you could tell as much by the celebrations as Gordon and his team-mates were swallowed up by the away end - but it did not ultimately prove a match-winning moment. By the 93rd minute, it was Guehi who was throwing his arms up in celebration after setting up Crystal Palace's equaliser.

Toothless visitors fail to fire with and without Isak

It said a lot about Crystal Palace's physicality that, in the opening stages, Joe Willock, Joelinton and Alexander Isak all went down at once. It set the tone for a stop-start first half and Isak was soon down once more receiving treatment after taking a whack to the hip following a collision with Tyrick Mitchell in the 11th minute.

Isak tried to run it off, but the Newcastle striker did not look comfortable and the Sweden international dropped to the turf midway through the first half to signal that he wanted to come off. Newcastle had options on the bench, including Callum Wilson, but the striker was still building up his match fitness following his first appearance in six months so Eddie Howe instead threw on Harvey Barnes and moved Anthony Gordon inside.

Barnes quickly made an impact, firing a dangerous ball across the ball, but no one was there to turn it into the net. It was a case of deja vu in the 39th minute when there was no white shirt there at the near post to get on the end of Barnes' delivery and the ball was easily claimed by goalkeeper Dean Henderson.

How Newcastle lacked a focal point - just a few days on from having two measly shots on target against West Ham with Isak - and, ultimately, but for a clever set-play, the Magpies would have lost this game against a relegation-threatened outfit. An xG of 0.02 tells its own story.

A bruising week

Newcastle looked like their old selves before the international break after defeating Chelsea, Arsenal and a Nottingham Forest side who were flying at the time. However, it is games like this week's that will be just as significant for Newcastle this season, who have only claimed a point from six on offer against Crystal Palace and West Ham. For context, if Newcastle had won both games, the Magpies would have gone second before Arsenal's late kick-off on Saturday evening.

If losing 2-0 at home against West Ham was sobering enough, this 1-1 draw at Crystal Palace was a similarly tough watch. Crystal Palace were languishing in 19th place. The Eagles had only won one league game all season. Oliver Glasner's team had only previously scored three goals at home, which was the worst record in the division, yet it was the hosts who had 16 shots, eight corners and 27 touches in Newcastle's box. At the other end, Crystal Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson did not even have a save to make.

Newcastle are going to have to offer an awful lot more when Liverpool rock up at St James' on Wednesday night.

Sandro Tonali impresses as a No 6

Ahead of this game, Eddie Howe admitted it was up to him to find the 'right' solution to get both Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes functioning in the same side. Was this it?

In his first league start in a month, Tonali lined up in the number six position while it was Bruno who played as the right-sided central midfielder. These are classy playmakers in their own right, but what was most striking against Crystal Palace was how the pair dug in for their side.

Tonali, for instance, repeatedly showed the other side of the game, making a series of eye-catching recovery runs, and it was rather telling that the midfielder completed a full 90 minutes for the first time since returning from his 10-month ban on an afternoon supporters repeatedly sang his name. It will certainly have given Howe food for thought.
