Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe is ready to double down on his wish to hold on to some of his back-up stars after Harvey Barnes suffered a fresh injury blow.

The £38million man left the field against Bromley on FA Cup third round day with a muscle issue to leave Howe issuing a fresh warning in his Press conference after the 3-1 win. The former Leicester City forward was today being assessed after being withdrawn at half-time but the win over the League Two side means that Newcastle have another game to prepare for next month with a trip to Birmingham City's St. Andrew's @ Knighthead Park on the horizon.

The likes of Matt Targett, Sean Longstaff and Alex Murphy have all been mooted for January moves but Howe is in a fight to hold on to a clutch of players who may not get the headlines, but are vital to United's chances this season all the season as they fight on three fights.

When pushed about Targett, who set up two goals against Bromley, leaving, Howe said: "I don't really want to talk about players leaving too much because we have a small squad. If we've lost Harvey today with an injury, that make us even tighter with numbers, so I don't really think that's in my mind in terms of letting too many players go."

Although, one player that could very well be gone by the end of January is Miguel Almiron. The South American did not take his chance against the League Two minnows and Howe will not stand in his way to go.
