Newcastle United fans could face travel issues if the Magpies successfully make it to the Carabao Cup final in March.

Eddie Howe's team hold a 2-0 lead from the semi-final first leg and head into the second leg as big favourites to get through to the Wembley showpiece. This has already led to fans confidently booking travel and hotels in the event Newcastle make it to the final.

The issue has been caused due to engineering works taking place between Darlington and Eaglescliffe closing all lines. This will affect LNER services from Newcastle to London Kings Cross.

Chronicle Live understands that LNER will run one train per hour in each direction to and from London Kings Cross via a diversionary route between York and Newcastle with journey times extended by approximately an hour.

It means that delays of up to an hour will be expected and replacement buses will be in operation. National Rail stated: "Buses replace trains between Leeds / York / Durham and Newcastle, and between Bishop Auckland and Eaglescliffe on Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 March."

Of course, Newcastle still have plenty of work to do in the second leg which takes place on February 5 at St James' Park. Hotel prices around Wembley are either sold out or at a premium.

Two nights at the Novotel on Wembley way cost £763 on Booking.com while the plush Hilton outside the stadium costs £1,398 for two nights. Fans have already started to take advantage of free cancellation policies in the event that Newcastle don't make it to face Tottenham Hotspur or Liverpool.
