Newcastle United transfer target Marc Guehi has seen his talks with Crystal Palace over a new contract break down, fuelling talks over a potential January move.

We Are Palace have reported that the Crystal Palace captain is holding out for Champions League football next season and is unwilling to commit his future to his current club. They also say that the South London club could be holding off on offering a new deal due to it being a possibility that they could suffer relegation to the Championship.

Guehi, who was the Magpies' top target in the summer, has a contract at Selhurst Park until June 2026. He has made 15 appearances in domestic competitions so far this campaign, scoring against Everton and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The defender spoke about the Newcastle link earlier this month after his side drew with Wolves. Guehi admitted that he has a 'good support system around me' and that he is 'completely grateful' to his current club.

Crystal Palace currently sit in the relegation zone and are just one point from safety. On the other hand, Newcastle are four points away from the Champions League places as they look to regain their spot in Europe's elite competition.

In Eddie Howe's weekly press conference, he was asked about Guehi. The 46-year-old played down making a big offer for the England international after reports of £70m bids, saying; "Firstly, I don’t think any bid (for Guehi) reached that level. That is far in excess of what the reality was.

"Secondly, with PSR, there is no pot of money that we have sitting there waiting to be spent. It’s all about trading in and out and making sure at the end we comply at PSR, and that is the first port of call with us as a football club.

"We have to comply, as we did last year. Then, of course, we are looking to improve the squad at every opportunity we can and there is a determination from everyone at the club to do that. So it’s about getting that balance right."
