Newcastle United star to get instant recall after West Ham United disaster

Dan Burn is likely to walk straight back into Eddie Howe's XI against Crystal Palace this weekend following the poor defeat against West Ham.

The Blyth lad was suspended for the encounter against the Hammers on Monday evening at St James' Park but will replace Lloyd Kelly for the trip to Selhurst Park. Burn's absence was glaring as Tomas Soucek easily peeled off Kelly and nodded home in the first half.

Speaking after the Premier League defeat to the Irons, Howe told Chronicle Live: "Yes, he was a big miss. You see the first goal and I think Dan's presence helps us in those situations for sure.

"But his leadership qualities on the pitch can't be under-estimated. He's an organiser, he's a really good communicator with his backline and his midfield, and certainly my initial assessment is that we missed that today."

In the aftermath of defeat many observers reflected how Newcastle had lost momentum after the Nottingham Forest game - caused by the international break. Yet Howe will get the chance to work with the players continuously until March with no breaks until the World Cup qualifiers next year.

Newcastle chief Howe said: "Yes. It's something that we love. The rhythm that you get from training and games, that's an art to try to get the team in the right physical condition and mental condition to play.

"We'll look forward to the intense period we've got coming up. We need to keep the squad in good health if we can. Obviously the two lads tonight are a concern, so we'll see how they look tomorrow."

Indeed, Newcastle's immediate concern was midfield duo Bruno Guimaraes and Joe Willock who both went off after injuries. Howe added: "We'll wait and see, hopefully nothing too serious."
