Newcastle United star Lewis Miley adds to England success with big Lee Carsley task on the way
After a week of celebrating Anthony Gordon, Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall's England exploits, Monday evening saw Lewis Miley add to the international break success stories as he made his first appearance for the under-21 side.
The Newcastle United midfielder started from the outset as the England youngsters extended their unbeaten run to 10 with a 1-1 draw against Netherlands' under-21 side. Miley lasted 58 minutes before he was replaced by Jesurun Rak-Sakyi of Crystal Palace.
After only a single minute of first-team football so far this term, the run out will have done Miley the world of good as Eddie Howe seeks to ease him back into life as a Newcastle option following months on the sidelines through injury.

After earning his first under-21 shout this week, Miley must now prove he can follow in the footsteps of Gordon, Livramento and Hall - who have all impressed Lee Carsley in recent years. The interim England boss has coached his final match as senior team manager and will now revert back to his role as under-21 boss when Thomas Tuchel takes over the Three Lions in January.
Carsley's decision to step back into his former role means he will once again be tasked with both finding and nurturing the next generation of Three Lions talent in the coming months and years - and he has a great track record with other members of the St James' Park dressing room.
Carsley won the under-21 European Championships with England's youth stars in 2023, with Gordon scooping Player of the Tournament after excelling as a central striker during the summer competition. Meanwhile, Livramento has been a regular fixture in the under-21 side in recent seasons, before earning three call-ups to the senior side in the aftermath of Carsley's appointment after Euro 2024.
Hall's ascent from potential international star to England contender was a rapid one, with little over a year between his maiden senior call-up last week and his first game with the men's Elite League squad back in October 2023. The versatile defender has gone from strength to strength under Howe on Tyneside and will have done his chances of further England minutes no harm with two impressive displays in recent wins over Greece and the Republic of Ireland.
Miley faces an uphill battle to win back his spot at Newcastle given the abundance of talent available to Howe in the middle of the park. However, after his own meteoric rise at club level, the local lad has proven he is worthy of his place among the likes of Archie Gray, James McAtee, Dane Scarlett, Tyler Dibling and all other up and coming English talents currently vying for under-21 spots.
With Newcastle currently boasting three England stars in their ranks, the hope is that Miley can continue to add to the recent success of Howe's homegrown stars.
