Newcastle United told new stadium condition as potential St James' Park move splits opinion

Talk of a potential move from St James’ Park is a topic that continues to split opinion within the Newcastle United fanbase.

Supporters were told by Brad Miller, the club’s chief operating officer, at the ‘We Are United’ event that a move away from their current stadium is being “seriously” considered.

The key reasons behind a move included increasing the club’s PSR status and the obvious increase in capacity to deal with ticket demand.

And since the event, supporters have been having their say on whether a potential move away from St James’ Park with opinion clearly still split on the idea.

Perhaps the most comprehensive comment on the original story came from AugCeasar who hasn’t yet been sold on the idea and wrote: “The reasons for staying at St James's Park are NOT all sentimental and it is with not much thought that those who think otherwise are just plain wrong.

“There is no ABSOLUTE need to move at all. The comments above say an extended St James's Park would be amazing. So where's the problem?

“This has to work for the club but finances should NEVER be the priority here. It has to be about the stadium remaining in the centre of our wonderful city, it should be a place the players feel proud to come and play. It should be a stadium fit for fans who want to absolutely love being inside it. New stadiums don't always offer that.”

“My preference is to remain at the current stadium and improve it beyond anything that has been done anywhere else.”

Many fans did seem more positive about a move, however, with DS09 stating: “Never in doubt the club should move.” and theanthillmob believing that a new stadium would “be the best in the world.”

Several supporters admitted that they would be sad to leave the stadium due to sentimental reasons but acknowledged that it may be time to move on under the right circumstances.

Jonnythebrave wrote: “Let's face it, SJP is full every home game and the only chance any casual fans have of getting tickets is to sign up for the ballot. The Saudis aren't going away and if they did, the club has already moved on considerably since the Ashley days.

“SJP has had its day, it would cost more to upgrade it and expand it to 60,000 than it would to build a new 70,000 stadium with better facilities and match day experience.

“We can't stay at SJP because a lot of our fans are emotionally attached to it, there has to be more than that.”

Similarly, Magpiebri added: “Moving the ground to a new place will be strange but in these days to move up, we need to move on to a new venue. I do think however it needs to be within walking distance of Town centre to keep it unique.”
