Newcastle United will not be splashing out £40million to sign Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson and will put the money to better use.

Those are the thoughts of journalist Peter O’Rourke, who believes Eddie Howe has bigger priorities. O’Rourke was speaking to Givemesport and believes a new centre-half and striker are more important. As good as he is, Henderson is a luxury they cannot afford right now.

Howe will be armed with a large transfer budget this summer. But it has now become clear it will not be crazy money despite the riches of the owners. Until Newcastle can grow and open up more revenue streams they will be restricted to what they can spend.

It is all about fitting in with Financial Fair Play and £40million goalkeepers are not on the agenda. Henderson has been strongly linked after failing to make a Premier League start for Manchester United this season.

Indeed reports in the Manchester Evening News have previously suggested that a £40million deal could happen. They have since reported that a loan deal is also an option. And out of the two that does look more likely.

O’Rourke also agrees. Depending on which reports you believe, Newcastle could have around £100million to spend. And Howe will not want to spend a large chunk of that on a goalkeeper.

“I don’t think they necessarily need to spend £40million on a goalkeeper, although Dean Henderson is a very good goalkeeper, as he has shown at Manchester United when he has played,” O’Rourke told Givemesport.

“I think it might take a large chunk out of their budget, so elsewhere, Eddie Howe might be looking to strengthen the squad, with maybe a new striker and a centre-half probably more of a priority than a goalkeeper.”

Newcastle need a new striker

O’Rourke is correct, Newcastle need to splash out on a new striker. Strikers that score goals are hard to find and they do not come cheap. If Newcastle are to move up a level that is where the money needs to go.

Callum Wilson has been the top goalscorer for Newcastle this season with six. He has of course been hampered by injury and could have got many more if fit. But still injuries happen and Newcastle need more quality and strength in depth. Someone who can get into double figures and push for 12, 13, 14 Premier League goals.

Landing such a striker is no guarantee but it is going to cost in the region of £40million to give yourself a chance. And that is where Newcastle should be spending their money.

Central defenders are in the same ball park. Tyrone Mings, Sven Botman etc will cost about the same. So two top signings will take up the bulk of Howe’s budget.
