Rampant Newcastle destroy Aston Villa as debutants make instant impact

Alexander Isak celebrates - Newcastle United vs Aston Villa live: Score and updates from the Premier League

Newcastle have begun their Premier League campaign with an emphatic 5-1 victory over Aston Villa. Two goals from Alexander Isak, one for Callum Wilson and goals on debut for Sandro Tonali and Harvey Barnes gave Eddie Howe’s side all three points in dominant style.

Tonali gave Newcastle the lead only five minutes into his debut before Aston Villa debutant Moussa Diaby netted to equalise. But only minutes later Newcastle were back in front through Isak. Aston Villa’s problems were mounting after Tyrone Mings was stretchered off with what looked like a serious knee injury.

Isak then made it 3-1 on the hour after a bad error from Ezri Konsa. It was then 4-1 after two substitutes, Harvey Barnes and Callum Wilson, combined to set up the latter before debutant Barnes rounded things off on the 90-minute mark to mark an emphatic start to Newcastle’s season.

Full-time

That is it at St. James’ Park and an emphatic win for Newcastle on the opening weekend. They have destroyed Unai Emery’s Aston Villa 5-1. Two goals for Isak, one for Wilson and goals on debut for Tonali and Barnes give Eddie Howe’s side all three points.

07:32 PM BST

90+3 min: Newcastle 5 Aston Villa 1

We are most of the way through the five added minutes as Luiz nearly scores from a free-kick as Pope just manages to save it.

07:30 PM BST

GOAL

Newcastle 5 Aston Villa 1 (Barnes) Another debutant scores as Barnes scores at the Gallowgate End on his debut. Once again awful, awful defending from Aston Villa as their high line is being torn to shreds. Barnes is sent through one-on-one and slots home past Martinez. Tonali has gone off and in the process was booked for the time it took him to go off.

07:28 PM BST

89 min: Newcastle 4 Aston Villa 1

Coutinho, having only just come on, has an opportunity to get a goal back for Aston Villa but under pressure from his compatriot Joelinton his shot goes wide.

07:25 PM BST

87 min: Newcastle 4 Aston Villa 1

Unai Emery now makes two changes as Cash and Diaby are off for Coutinho and Philogene.

07:23 PM BST

85 min: Newcastle 4 Aston Villa 1

Double change for Newcastle as Guimaraes and Almiron are replaced by Longstaff and Murphy.

07:20 PM BST

81 min: Newcastle 4 Aston Villa 1

How is it not 5-1? Aston Villa are all over the place at the back as Barnes is sent through again. Once again he is selfless as he lays it off to Wilson. It should be a simple finish but Martinez pulls off a good save to deny him a second goal in a few minutes. Wilson should have scored there. From the subsequent corner Joelinton heads it towards goal but it is cleared off the line.

07:17 PM BST

GOAL

Newcastle 4 Aston Villa 1 (Wilson) It is now 4-1 to Newcastle. Barnes is played through and unselfishly lays it across to Wilson or smashes it home past Martinez. There are suspicions of offside and even the Newcastle players do not look convinced that it was onside. After a VAR review it is adjudged to be onside and it is a goal. That looks a weird decision as Barnes looked offside.

07:15 PM BST

74 min: Newcastle 3 Aston Villa 1

It has been refreshing to see in this game the referee Andy Madley really punish dissent or bad behaviour. It was a directive we were told about going into the season and it is good to see that being followed through. We will have to wait and see if that continues for the rest of the season.

07:13 PM BST

74 min: Newcastle 3 Aston Villa 1

Cash drills a dangerous cross-come-shot across the box and Pope parries it behind. Digne’s corner meets the head of Carlos but the ball goes wide. No danger for Pope in the Newcastle goal.

07:06 PM BST

68 min: Newcastle 3 Aston Villa 1

Newcastle are awarded a free-kick but Guimaraes goes into the book for waving an imaginary card at the referee. Couple of subs for Newcastle as Isak and Gordon are replaced by Wilson and Barnes, who is on for his Newcastle debut.

07:03 PM BST

65 min: Newcastle 3 Aston Villa 1

Aston Villa should have got a goal back. Diaby plays the ball through to Watkins whose shot is saved by Pope. It falls to Cash who should score but his shot goes over the bar. What a chance for Cash! Should be 3-2.

07:02 PM BST

64 min: Newcastle 3 Aston Villa 1

A curious substitution from Unai Emery as captain John McGinn is replaced by defender Diego Carlos. A change of formation perhaps?

07:00 PM BST

62 min: Newcastle 3 Aston Villa 1

Aston Villa are on the ropes here. Martinez comes out of his goal to head the ball away but Almiron sprints to collect the ball. First-time he hits but Martinez gets back just in time to save it. This game could be out of sight for the visitors very quickly.

06:58 PM BST

60 min: Newcastle 3 Aston Villa 1

Isak should make it 4-1 and get a hat-trick. He is played through on the right-hand side but his shot is straight at Martinez.

06:57 PM BST

GOAL

Newcastle 3 Aston Villa 1 (Isak) What on earth are you doing Konsa? He has the situation under control in his own penalty area but then carelessly loses possession. Isak then takes advantage of Konsa’s mistake by lifting the ball delightfully over Martinez and now Newcastle have a two-goal advantage.

06:55 PM BST

56 min: Newcastle 2 Aston Villa 1

Confusion around St. James’ Park as Isak goes through and has a shot straight at Martinez. Was it a foul? Seemingly not given but eventually the flag goes up for offside. Looking back at the replays it was a very tight call. The ball did not end up in the back of the next though so no controversy.

06:52 PM BST

55 min: Newcastle 2 Aston Villa 1

Aston Villa have a corner after Digne’s cross is blocked. Digne takes the corner but Kamara’s header at the near post is way off target.

06:51 PM BST

53 min: Newcastle 2 Aston Villa 1

Gordon is now the latest player into the book. He takes out Cash and got none of the ball so he cannot really have any complaints.

06:49 PM BST

51 min: Newcastle 2 Aston Villa 1

Big chance for Newcastle to make it 3-1. Gordon feeds a ball to Almiron on the left-hand channel of the penalty area and he plays the ball across the box. It is too heavy and Isak cannot get on the end of it. Almiron really should have found Isak there.

06:46 PM BST

47 min: Newcastle 2 Aston Villa 1

Cash is the next player into the book after cynically taking out Gordon. Already a lot of yellow cards in this game and we are only just past half-time.

06:43 PM BST

Second half

We are back underway at St. James’ Park for the second half. Aston Villa have made a change at half-time as Tielemans replaces Bailey, who was struggling with an injury.

06:28 PM BST

Half-time

That is the half-time whistle and Newcastle lead 2-1 after a long first half. Tonali gave Newcastle the lead on debut before another debutant Diaby levelled. Isak then restored Newcastle’s lead. Mings went off with what looked like a serious knee injury.

06:26 PM BST

45+10 min: Newcastle 2 Aston Villa 1

Trippier plays a free-kick to the back post but the header goes over the bar. That should be half-time...

06:25 PM BST

45+8 min: Newcastle 2 Aston Villa 1

The free-kick comes to nothing as Aston Villa give away a free-kick. Newcastle then break and Martinez is miles out of his goal and takes out Almiron. The Newcastle fans are desperate for Martinez to be sent off but that was never a red card as it was near the corner and there was cover. Rightly so he is booked. Botman is also booked in the aftermath for dissent.

06:22 PM BST

45+7 min: Newcastle 2 Aston Villa 1

Aston Villa are going to have a free-kick in a dangerous area as we come towards the end of the added time...

06:17 PM BST

45 min: Newcastle 2 Aston Villa 1

Luiz wants a penalty after he feels he was brought down by Joelinton in the Newcastle box but nothing give. We will have 10 minutes of additional time at the end of the first half. We had a long delay for the Mings injury and a lengthy VAR review for Isak’s goal.

06:13 PM BST

42 min: Newcastle 2 Aston Villa 1

Nearly a second goal on debut for Diaby. He plays a really well-worked one-two with Luiz and is in a great position to score. But instead of shooting towards the far post he goes for the near post and it hits the side-netting. He has caused the Newcastle defence a number of issues so far.

06:10 PM BST

39 min: Newcastle 2 Aston Villa 1

After a frantic start to the game, it feels like that lengthy delay due to Mings’ injury has taken quite a lot out of the game, almost like letting air out of a balloon.

06:06 PM BST

35 min: Newcastle 2 Aston Villa 1

Digne is going to take an Aston Villa corner from the right. It is headed on at the near post by Luiz but none of his teammates are there to get on the end of it. Perhaps if he had made better contact with it he could have scored himself.

06:03 PM BST

32 min: Newcastle 2 Aston Villa 1

After Douglas Luiz was booked for dissent after Tonali’s goal, Digne is now in the book for kicking the ball out of Almiron’s hands when the ball had gone out for a Newcastle throw. It is good to see the referees clamping down on that type of behaviour.

06:01 PM BST

30 min: Newcastle 2 Aston Villa 1

We are now back underway after a lengthy delay. Mings was stretchered off and that could be a second serious injury in a week after Emiliano Buendia’s knee injury.

05:59 PM BST

28 min: Newcastle 2 Aston Villa 1

In that last sequence, Mings went down heavily having lost out in a duel to Isak. He has gone down clutching his knee and it looks serious as the game has now been delayed for a number of minutes. He is going to go off on a stretcher. Pau Torres is going to come on for his Premier League debut, having joined from Villareal for £45 million in July.

05:55 PM BST

24 min: Newcastle 2 Aston Villa 1

The sequence we have just seen proves the end-to-end nature of this game. Newcastle move into Aston Villa’s penalty area but then the visitors break. Diaby takes the ball into the Newcastle box and feeds it across to Watkins, who drags his first-time shot wide.

05:52 PM BST

22 min: Newcastle 2 Aston Villa 1

It has been end-to-end so far and this could be any scoreline. Not many signs of any defending mind!

05:49 PM BST

Goal stands

After a long review from VAR, Botman is adjudged to be onside and the goal stands. What a crazy start to the game! What will the final scoreline be?

05:48 PM BST

GOAL

Newcastle 2 Aston Villa 1 (Isak) Three goals in the opening 15 minutes. The ball is whipped towards Botman at the back post who drags it back across goal to Isak who slams home. But will it stand? VAR is checking for offside...

05:42 PM BST

GOAL

Newcastle 1 Aston Villa 1 (Diaby) We are only 10 minutes into the game and two debutants have scored. Moussa Diaby says to Tonali ‘Anything you can do I can do better’. Digne crosses from the left and Watkins gets his head to it first. It falls to Diaby who on the half volley thumps it home with his weaker right foot and we are level. What a start to the game!

05:40 PM BST

10 min: Newcastle 1 Aston Villa 0

In the aftermath of Tonali’s goal, Douglas Luiz was booked for dissent, something the referees are keen to clamp down on this season.

05:39 PM BST

8 min: Newcastle 1 Aston Villa 0

Aston Villa are all over the place so far and Newcastle are all over them. Tonali is so close to making it 2-0 but his shot is saved and narrowly goes wide. Aston Villa then break through Diaby but from a tight angle he cannot beat Pope.

05:37 PM BST

GOAL!

Newcastle 1 Aston Villa 0 (Tonali) A goal for the debutant! Just after Guimaraes has a shot saved by Martinez, Gordon plays a great cross right onto the edge of the six-yard box and Tonali is on hand to score six minutes into his Premier League debut.

05:36 PM BST

5 min: Newcastle 0 Aston Villa 0

Trippier’s delivery is poor and is cleared by the front defender away from danger.

05:34 PM BST

4 min: Newcastle 0 Aston Villa 0

Nearly big danger for Aston Villa. After a great turn from Guimaraes, the Brazilian threads a ball through to Isak but Aston Villa just about manage to get the ball away before the Swedish striker can shoot. Newcastle now have a free-kick in a dangerous area on the left.

05:33 PM BST

2 min: Newcastle 0 Aston Villa 0

Aston Villa are certainly taking a few risks at the back as Newcastle press high up. Unai Emery clearly drills it into his players to play out from the back but that is not without risk.

We are underway at St. James’ Park.

Howe looking for one more signing

Newcastle United have invested heavily in the close season but manager Eddie Howe said on Friday they still need one more addition to improve squad depth as they fight on two fronts in the Premier League and Champions League.

Newcastle spent £128 million on bringing in Sandro Tonali, Harvey Barnes and Tino Livramento in the close season.

But with the club qualifying for the Champions League for the first time in two decades, Howe said he would like to reinforce the squad.

“I’d love one more player personally and I think then we’d have the ideal depth at this moment with the injuries that we currently have, let’s wait and see,” Howe told reporters ahead of their Premier League opener against Aston Villa on Saturday.

“Not 100 per cent [sure of signing more players] because it depends on the deal and I think we may have to be creative with this last player.

“But it’s difficult to make that a definite because, again, it depends on injuries between now and the window shutting.”

The manager confirmed Joe Willock, who missed the end of last season with a hamstring injury, remains sidelined at least until mid-September.

“He has just felt a little bit of discomfort in his hamstring, not necessarily another pull to the area,” the 45-year-old manager said.

“We will probably miss him for the first group of games before the first international break.”

Howe did receive a boost with defender Fabian Schar returning from injury, saying that he has been training well.

Newcastle moved early to bring in midfielder Tonali from AC Milan, with the player signed in early July, and Howe said he is happy with how the Italian player settled in during pre-season.

“I think when you’re bringing players from abroad you have to try and get them early. I have to compliment Sandro on how he has handled the move and how he is adapting to the changes,” Howe said.

“We’re pleased to get the majority of our business done early and I think we’re in a good place.”
