Newcastle United's £105 million transfer example which provides hope for further signings

Persuading a target to join Newcastle United is certainly an easier task than it once was thanks to the ambitions of the owners. It may have taken a little while but those in the boardroom have not been shy when it comes to what they want to achieve on Tyneside. Indeed club chairman, Yasir Al-Rumayyan, spoke about Newcastle being 'number one' in every aspect it can.

While things this season started slowly, the recent form - and three consecutive wins - has been a reminder of the foundations that Toon boss Eddie Howe has built in his three years in charge. There's been Champions League football and a cup final - and while both ended in disappointment it was a notable shift away from the Mike Ashley days and the club barely existing, let alone competing.

When it comes to potential arrivals, it's that ambition of becoming a regular Champions League side and competition for honours - alongside a hefty weekly wage - which will go someway to persuading a player that Tyneside is the place for him.

But now there's another sell for Howe and the rest of the recruitment team - international recognition for his players, reaffirmed by England's last game in which a trio of the Magpies started. Lewis Hall and Tino Livramento made their full debuts while Anthony Gordon continued his fine form his country, grabbing a goal in England's 5-0 win over the Republic of Ireland.

That was the first time since 1997 that Newcastle had three of their players starting in the same England team - the trio that day being Rob Lee, David Batty and Alan Shearer.

Since Howe's arrival and the subsequent up turn in form of Newcastle from relegation candidates to the top four - players in his squad have been rewarded on the international scene. Bruno Guimaraes, for example, since joining in January 2022 has clocked up 28 appearances for Brazil - he'd only played three times prior to his move.

His fellow countryman, Joelinton made his debut in 2023 - while the aforementioned Gordon has gone from being touted for the England senior squad to becoming a regular starter for his country, all since joining Newcastle. If you look back at Ashley's ownership of United - in the 14 years he was in charge, just 11 England caps were given to Toon players.

Speaking on this week's episode of The Monday Show, host Andrew Musgrove believes potential arrivals will be impressed when they see several of Newcastle's stars breaking into their respective country's squad.

“I think what it does for Newcastle United," he said, "it's another feather in the cap when it comes to a sales pitch for potential arrivals.

"Of course, you want big wages, you want European football, you want cup wins but also, you want to know that you join Newcastle United, and if you're not already in your team at international level, playing for Newcastle United will get you over that line.

"We've seen that not just with the three there who featured on Sunday, but across the world with Bruno and Joelinton and others who are getting their international caps because Newcastle United are playing so well, and they're playing well in a good Newcastle United side.”
