Newcastle are at an advanced stage in their quest to pull off a Nick Pope coup, though the plug might be pulled on two, more expensive deals, per a report.

Pope, 30, was once again one of the stand-out goalkeepers in the Premier League last season. The stopper almost single-handedly gave the Clarets a fighting chance of staving off relegation with a series of inspired displays down the stretch.

However, his efforts were ultimately in vain, something that is highly likely to see an exit from Turf Moor materialise this summer.

Pope is in the prime of his career and would represent a stellar signing for the vast bulk of top flight sides. According to the Telegraph, it is Newcastle that are poised to pull the trigger.

The newspaper state the Magpies are close to agreeing a deal with Burnley. Despite his heroics between the sticks, the transfer fee is expected to be the exceedingly good value sum of between £8m-£10m.

Pope’s arrival would likely relegate current No 1 Martin Dubravka to second choice.

Additionally, back-up stopper Freddie Woodman would then be free to complete a move to Preston North End. Karl Darlow too could see an exit greenlit once Pope arrives.

From Pope’s perspective, he is deemed keen to re-establish himself as a contender for England’s starting role at the Qatar World Cup. A move back into the Premier League is a must in that regard and Newcastle are poised to give him the opportunity.

However, the news is far less positive concerning Hugo Ekitike and Sven Botman.

Newcastle frustrations grow

The Telegraph add Newcastle’s hierarchy are becoming increasingly frustrated at their inability to land the striker and centre-back.

Regarding Botman, Lille are reportedly refusing to budge from their £37m price tag. Newcastle have offered £30m, though that did not yield a breakthrough.

Botman is deemed open to joining Newcastle, though AC Milan remain a competitor in the transfer race.

Fellow Ligue 1 star Ekitike is also no closer to joining the Magpies.

A £12m deal that could ultimately rise to £26m has reportedly been struck with Reims. However, the marksman has gone on holiday and contact between Newcastle and the player’s representatives has become non-existent for over a week.

Furthermore, the striker is reportedly being offered around to other clubs, much to Newcastle’s dismay.

While the pair remain firmly on Newcastle’s radar, it’s claimed they are prepared to walk away from the deals if breakthroughs aren’t soon forthcoming.
