Newcastle vs Arsenal: Eddie Howe addresses Mikel Arteta confrontation ahead of Premier League clash
Eddie Howe insists he has no issue with Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta ahead of the huge Premier League game with Newcastle on Sunday.
The two drew 0-0 back in January in what was a fiery affair at the Emirates Stadium.
The Magpies frustrated an Arsenal team who had previously swatted all before them at home in an ill-tempered affair.
Pundits Alan Shearer and Chris Sutton were critical of Arteta’s behaviour on the touchline that day, with the latter labelling the Gunners boss “a clown”.
Howe was unhappy with Arteta calling for a late penalty after Granit Xhaka’s late cross appeared to hit Jacob Murphy on the arm and the two were involved in an argument on the touchline.
Still, the Newcastle manager was full of praise for the Spaniard and his staff ahead of the return fixture at St James’ Park on Sunday.
"I’ve got a lot of respect for Mikel,” he said at Friday’s pre-match press conference.
“I think he has done an incredible job when you consider the team he picked up, and the position they were in, [when compared to] the team he has now and what they are doing.
"That is a brilliant coaching job and you have to admire everything they are doing.
"Within a game you will always have moments where you come up against opponents and there is a bit of confrontation. That is natural and part of the job. No issues from my side.
"Whatever happens it will be a great spectacle between two really good teams."
