Newcastle vs Man United LIVE!

Substitute Edinson Cavani scored in the second half to help Manchester United salvage a 1-1 draw at Newcastle after a poor performance from the visitors.

Cavani scored the equaliser with 20 minutes to go, after Allan Saint-Maximin gave the home side a seventh-minute lead with a fine individual effort, side-stepping two markers before he fired past David De Gea.

The visiting goalkeeper kept a lethargic United afloat with an array of good saves as Newcastle always looked dangerous on the break, with home striker Callum Wilson also having a goal ruled out for offside in the 38th minute.

Saint-Maximin spurned a sitter early in the second half and De Gea then made a pair of stops in quick succession before Cavani beat home keeper Martin Dubravka at the second attempt after his initial shot was blocked.

United then barely survived a late Newcastle onslaught as Jacob Murphy hit the post and De Gea clawed Miguel Almiron’s shot on the rebound out of the top corner.

Neville not impressed...

Neville slams ‘whinging’ Ronaldo and Fernandes for poor body language

Sean Longstaff full of praise for Joelinton...

22:15 , Matt Verri

“The abuse he gets is a disgrace to be honest. Every day he’s the best player in training. If he’s on your team, you win.”

The Newcastle midfielder isn’t having any criticism of his teammate.

21:59 , Matt Verri

Newcastle 1-1 Man United

It finishes all-square at St James’ Park. Eddie Howe’s side were brilliant throughout, and deserved all three points. They’ll regret that, but also the injuries to Callum Wilson and Allan Saint-Maximin.

Ralf Rangnick’s side were really poor, but they’ve got out of it with a point at least.

21:56 , Matt Verri

90+3 mins: Newcastle almost throw it away!

Literally too. Dubravka drops the ball under no real pressure and it falls to Sancho. He plays it to Cavani who lifts it towards goal, but Newcastle get bodies back to clear.

So close to a winner...

21:54 , Matt Verri

21:54 , Matt Verri

90+1 mins: Still Newcastle come flooding forward. Joelinton with the shot, Varane blocks... home fans want a penalty, but they won’t get it. Outside the box, and probably not a handball anyway.

21:52 , Matt Verri

89 mins: Ball nearly falls to Joelinton, but he’s crowded out in the box.

Newcastle throwing everything at United now. What a performance it’s been from the home side.

Six minutes to be added on.

21:50 , Matt Verri

87 mins: Ronaldo and Fernandes combine on the edge of the box. Surprised that neither of them go for goal, and they lose it.

United so lucky to still be level. Murphy’s wonderful effort hits the bar, falls to Almiron. Edge of the box, curling strike... destined for the far corner, but De Gea turns it behind sensationally.

21:47 , Matt Verri

84 mins: Shelvey lets fly from at least 30 yards out. De Gea holds onto it as the Newcastle shirts follow it in.

No sign of a late charge from United yet. Still a long way from their best. Sancho has the chance to play in Ronaldo, but it’s straight to the defender.

21:46 , Matt Verri

83 mins: Huge blow for Newcastle. Saint-Maximin pulls up and he’s going to have to be replaced. They’ve lost him and Wilson to injury tonight.

Dwight Gayle on in his place.

21:43 , Matt Verri

81 mins: Newcastle sitting deeper and deeper. United will back themselves to create at least one more big chance with the players they have on the pitch.

Ronaldo brings down a long ball and plays it wide to Sancho. Fired across goal, Cavani very close to flicking it in at the near post.

21:40 , Matt Verri

78 mins: Some very tired bodies on both sides now. McTominay one of them, and he’s replaced by Matic.

21:38 , Matt Verri

75 mins: Man United nearly in front!

Telles plays a lovely low cross into the box... Lascelles and Dubravka leave it to each other, and Cavani is there at the back post. Dinks it over the goalkeeper, but Lascelles hooks it away.

21:36 , Matt Verri

73 mins: Different game now... Newcastle will be fearing the worst for the rest of the match.

Ronaldo gives it away cheaply and Joelinton wins it back. Again. Do the hosts have anything left in the tank?

GOAL! Newcastle 1-1 Man United | Edinson Cavani 71'

21:33 , Matt Verri

They don’t really deserve it but they won’t care. Dalot pulls it back really well into the box, and Cavani’s initial effort is blocked.

But it’s straight back to him and he poked it into the corner. Game on!

21:30 , Matt Verri

67 mins: Newcastle back on top again.

Murphy whips a dangerous ball towards the far corner... beats everyone, and De Gea is a relieved man as it drifts wide of the post.

It’s raining cards at St James’... Maguire completely beaten by Saint-Maximin and it’s a really poor sliding challenge. Yellow card.

21:28 , Matt Verri

65 mins: More wonderful work from Saint-Maximin.

Drives inside, cuts back onto his left and unleashes a strike at goal. De Gea palms it away.

Fernandes into the book for moaning, unhappy at some of the decisions from the referee. Krafth then joins him, after hauling down Rashford.

21:26 , Matt Verri

63 mins: United cannot deal with Newcastle on the break.

Joelinton drives up the pitch, and slides it right to Fraser. Powerful strike but straight at De Gea.

Rashford then launches the United counter and gets into the box brilliantly, but it’s a weak effort. Game really opening up.

21:23 , Matt Verri

60 mins: Frustration building for United’s players, and Newcastle won’t mind that at all. Minutes ticking away.

Rashford goes for the cross... shanks it so badly it goes out sideways for a goal-kick. It’s a horror night for United.

21:20 , Matt Verri

57 mins: Murphy nearly burns past Maguire and runs onto a loose pass, but the centre-back just about has enough in the tank to get back.

Ronaldo then cleans out Fraser, it’s a horrible challenge. Wild hack... yellow card. He can be grateful it’s only yellow.

21:18 , Matt Verri

55 mins: Home fans urging their side up the pitch, celebrating the press like a goal.

Sancho in space again and he does much better this time. Pulled back to Cavani... shanks it wide. Big chance.

21:16 , Matt Verri

53 mins: Definitely more urgency from the visitors. Saint-Maximim staying on the halfway line waiting to break away though.

Sancho has loads of space on the right after the switch of play from Maguire. Crosses it straight out of play.

21:14 , Matt Verri

51 mins: Late from Joelinton, who catches McTominay and that will be a United free-kick. They need to try and build some momentum, haven’t been able to have any sort of sustained pressure so far.

Falls to Ronaldo on the edge of the box and he fires it well wide.

21:12 , Matt Verri

49 mins: Very optimistic from Rashford but it’s a great effort from absolutely miles out.

Dipping, swerving... tipped behind for a corner. Telles takes, and once again it comes to nothing from United. Been poor from set-pieces so far.

21:10 , Matt Verri

48 mins: WHAT A CHANCE!

How has Saint-Maximin not scored?! United have not improved at all in the early stages after the break.

De Gea has made the save, but the Newcastle man has given the goalkeeper a chance from close-range. Had to score.

21:09 , Matt Verri

47 mins: With Wilson off, it’s Saint-Maximin through the middle for Newcastle. Eddie Howe not wanting to move his new midfield general, Joelinton.

Saint-Maximim roaring away into space, but gets the ball stuck under his feet. Less than a minute into the second-half and United very nearly caught on the break.

21:07 , Matt Verri

Rangnick also not impressed... the United boss has made two changes at the break.

Greenwood and Fred off, Sancho and Cavani on. Back underway.

21:06 , Matt Verri

Gary Neville not impressed with what he’s seen so far.

“[The players] got the last manager the sack. Ralf Rangnick isn’t going to be sacked — but they’ll get a lot of managers sacked if they carry on like that.”

21:02 , Matt Verri

Four shots from both sides in the first-half. Two on target for Newcastle, including that goal, and just one for United.

Much, much to improve on for Rangnick’s men.

20:52 , Matt Verri

Newcastle 1-0 Man United

The hosts lead at the break and you’d have to say it’s fully deserved. Saint-Maximin with the early goal, and Newcastle have constantly looked dangerous on the break... United look so vulnerable at the back.

Only negative for the Magpies is that Callum Wilson injury. He went off right at the end of the half with what looked like a calf injury, replaced by Jacob Murphy.

Rangnick’s side have offered very little in attack too. Plenty for the German to fix in the next 15 minutes.

20:48 , Matt Verri

45+2 mins: Brilliant from Newcastle!

Joelinton, who has been fantastic, nutmegs Rashford before pulling it back to Saint-Maximin. He tries to curl it towards the far corner but Fred is there this time to block.

Wilson back on, but he’s not moving well at all.

20:46 , Matt Verri

45 mins: Greenwood loses it, and Wilson does brilliantly to hold it up and turn away from a couple of defenders. He wins the free-kick.

Goes down, looks to have awkwardly twisted something... maybe his knee. Looks in a fair bit of pain. Four minutes added on, but it will likely be a fair bit longer now.

20:44 , Matt Verri

43 mins: Ronaldo flicks it nicely to Fernandes, who is into the box but his effort is well saved.

Doesn’t matter anyway, offside flag is up. Fernandes is moaning about it, but Ronaldo was about five yards offside.

20:42 , Matt Verri

41 mins: He didn’t, and it was really well worked by United.

Fernandes with a lovely dink over the wall and Greenwood is charging onto it.... ball won’t quite drop for him, and Dubravka is there to smother any attempted chip.

20:41 , Matt Verri

40 mins: Incredible atmosphere at St James’ Park. Home fans are celebrating every tackle like a goal.

Rashford brought down and United have a free-kick about 35 yards out. Very central. Surely even Ronaldo won’t go for this...

20:39 , Matt Verri

37 mins: Rashford this time with the error... Ronaldo was bursting away down the left, but the Englishman makes a complete mess of the pass. Ronaldo less than impressed. Again.

Newcastle double the lead..... NO! Saint-Maximin with a mazy run, back into the box where Wilson turns it in.

But he’s definitely offside.

20:36 , Matt Verri

35 mins: Newcastle’s first chance to break for quite some time.

Saint-Maximin has it and he slides it through to Wilson, but Maguire gets across to cut it out. The centre-back then decides to go straight through the Newcastle striker and he gives away a silly free-kick.

20:34 , Matt Verri

33 mins: That certainly did not go to plan for Ronaldo.

Fernandes makes a good run in behind and Lascelles can’t cut out the pass. The midfielder stands a nice ball up to the far post, where Krafth loops a header straight up.

Ronaldo lines up the volley... completely misses it, and it bounces up off his face and behind for a goal-kick.

20:31 , Matt Verri

31 mins: Greenwood takes matters into his own hands this time, but his shot from outside the box is well blocked.

Rashford wants a decision to go his way, appealing for handball. Referee waves the appeals away.

20:30 , Matt Verri

29 mins: Dubravka does well... just about.

Greenwood plays the ball in behind and Fernandes is running onto it. The goalkeeper comes rushing out and cooly takes it past the United midfielder before launching it away up field. Couldn’t afford to get that wrong.

20:28 , Matt Verri

26 mins: Saint-Maximin is one-on-one against Dalot... not for long, McTominay comes charging across to double up on the winger. The Newcastle man wants a free-kick but he’s not going to get one.

United still trail, and they haven’t created a single chance of any note.

20:26 , Matt Verri

25 mins: McTominay down, injured himself in that passage of play. He’ll be fine to continue though.

Newcastle launch a long throw into the box... Wilson gives away a free-kick. His teammates will be frustrated with that.

20:24 , Matt Verri

23 mins: Fred throws himself into a challenge, but Shelvey wins the ball and he has so much space to run into.

Drives into the United half, the defenders keep backing off... he lets fly from 25 yards out, and De Gea punches away the swerving effort.

20:22 , Matt Verri

21 mins: Rashford playing really wide on the right, giving United some width. His ball into the box is blocked behind for a corner.

Telles takes it, but Newcastle are again up to the task. Fernandes launches it back up the pitch... out for a goal-kick. This has been an extremely poor start from United.

20:19 , Matt Verri

18 mins: United win a corner, but Lascelles gets his head on it and Newcastle clear the danger.

Joelinton goes down with the ball out of play, looks like he’ll need some treatment.

20:18 , Matt Verri

16 mins: We’ve played just over a quarter of an hour, and Ronaldo is making his frustration very clear.

Twice he makes a run in behind, twice he gets ignored. He’s furious. Greenwood then tries to play the cross towards his teammate, but Ronaldo can’t get on the end of it.

Home fans enjoying his annoyance, it’s fair to say.

20:15 , Matt Verri

14 mins: Newcastle don’t need to put themselves under pressure though...

Saint-Maximin loses it and Rashford can break into space. Manquillo stops him chopping inside, but the goalkeeper then passes it short to Shelvey and the midfielder very nearly gets caught in a dangerous position.

That opening goal...

20:14 , Matt Verri

20:13 , Matt Verri

12 mins: United look so, so open at the back when they lose the ball. Newcastle running riot on the counter.

Fraser’s cross is cleared to the edge of the box... Joelinton is there waiting, and he curls an effort just wide. Rangnick’s side are hanging on for dear life.

20:10 , Matt Verri

10 mins: This is a sensational start from Newcastle.

Saint-Maximin picks up a loose ball and he has space once again. Curls a ball towards Wilson in the box, but it’s just too heavy for the striker.

GOAL! Newcastle 1-0 Man United | Allan Saint-Maximin 7'

20:08 , Matt Verri

Varane this time gets caught on it, and Newcastle are running into space with numbers.

Longstaff plays it out to the left, where Saint-Maximin is waiting. He cuts inside, and on the stretch curls a wonderful finish into the far corner. De Gea didn’t move.

20:07 , Matt Verri

6 mins: Shelvey lucky to avoid an early yellow card. Gets caught on the ball by Greenwood, and the Newcastle midfielder clips the heels of the youngster to stop him bursting away.

Won’t get away with many more of those.

20:05 , Matt Verri

4 mins: Greenwood puts Lascelles under pressure, and he can only knock it out for a throw-in.

Joelinton has been buzzing around in the opening minutes, throwing himself into the challenges and winning the ball back for his side. Not sure how you’d describe his position... sort of in midfield, sort of up front, sort of on the wing.

20:03 , Matt Verri

2 mins: Rashford has started on the right wing for the visitors, with Greenwood central alongside Ronaldo.

Terrible from Maguire, who runs straight past the ball and Fraser is through. Gets to the byline, but his cutback is cleared by Varane.

20:01 , Matt Verri

Man United get us underway at St James Park!

19:57 , Matt Verri

Players out onto the pitch. Big boost for United to have Varane back, makes the defence look a lot more secure.

Newcastle fans welcome their side out, for the final time in 2021.

Ten minutes until kick-off...

19:51 , Matt Verri

19:45 , Matt Verri

Surely we’ll have goals to enjoy tonight.

Ronaldo, Rashford, Greenwood, Fernandes, Wilson, Saint-Maximin, Joelinton, Fraser...

There are certainly enough attacking players on the pitch for it to be an exciting watch!

Warm-ups nearly done...

19:37 , Matt Verri

Eddie Howe on stretched squad

19:27 , Matt Verri

Two goalkeepers and just six outfield players on the bench for Newcastle tonight. This is what Eddie Howe has had to say pre-match.

“It’s been difficult in the preparation for today. We’ve got a mixture of injuries and Covid cases,” he said.

“The squad is stretched but we’re making the best of the situation. We want to play and hopefully we give a really good account of ourselves.”

Rangnick on Christmas period...

19:20 , Matt Verri

“I’ve watched Premier League football for the last 40 years so when it was also the First Division and I know what kind of tradition it is to play football over Christmas and on Boxing Day, the 27th, the 30th and even New Year’s Day or the 2nd January,” the United boss said.

“So if somebody came across the idea to abolish then we might as well speak about abolishing the five o’clock tea or the Queen or whatever – this is all part of the tradition of this country and I’m very much looking forward to being part of this for the first time in my career.”

Safe to say the German is a fan...

(Getty Images)

19:09 , Matt Verri

So Varane is back and straight into the starting lineup, alongside Maguire in defence. Ronaldo, Rashford, Fernandes and Greenwood all start, with Sancho on the bench.

Rangnick also keeps his faith in Telles and Dalot as the full-backs.

Plenty of attacking players on the pitch for Newcastle - Joelinton, Fraser, Saint-Maximin, Wilson will be hoping to cause the United backline some problems.

19:03 , Matt Verri

Starting XI: Dubravka, Krafth, Schar, Lascelles, Manquillo, Shelvey, Longstaff, Joelinton, Fraser, Saint-Maximin, Wilson

Subs: Woodman, Gillespie, Hendrick, Murphy, Almiron, Anderson, Gayle, White

19:01 , Matt Verri

Starting XI: De Gea, Dalot, Maguire, Varane, Telles, Fred, McTominay, Fernandes, Greenwood, Rashford, Ronaldo

Subs: Henderson, Wan-Bissaka, Shaw, Jones, Matic, Van de Beek, Elanga, Sancho, Cavani

18:52 , Matt Verri

Ten minutes until we get team news from St James’ Park.

Difficult to predict what side Ralf Rangnick puts out, after more than two weeks without a match.

Stage is set...

18:41 , Matt Verri

18:35 , Matt Verri
