A brand new name has emerged as the leading candidate to replace Jesse Marsch as the next Leeds manager after former favourite Carlos Corberan signed a new deal at West Brom.

Leeds Utd called time on the stewardship of Jesse Marsch on Monday. The former RB Leipzig and RB Salzburg boss had presided over just two league wins since the month of August. With a measly 11 points picked up from a possible 51 over the last 17 matches, a change was deemed necessary.

Former Leeds Under-23s coach, Carlos Corberan, quickly emerged as the leading contender to take the reins.

The Spaniard is currently managing Championship side West Brom who are situated just inside the play-off places. He previously guided Huddersfield Town to the play-off final in 2022, though they fell to Steve Cooper’s Nottingham Forest 1-0 at Wembley.

Corberan was among the early favourites with the bookies ahead of Argentine pair Mauricio Pochettino and Marcelo Bielsa, as well as Rayo Vallecano’s Andoni Iraola.

However, the 39-year-old has decisively ended speculation he’ll return to west Yorkshire by signing a new contract at the Hawthorns.

The news was announced on West Brom’s official website, with Corberan extending his stay until the summer of 2027.

At roughly the same time as Corberan’s new deal was announced, a surprise new name quickly leapt to the top of the favourites list to succeed Marsch at Elland Road.

Feyenoord’s Arne Slot is the new surprise frontrunner having been namechecked by Dutch journalist Martijn Krabbendam.

Krabbendam insisted Slot is on Leeds’ radar while appearing on the Dick Voormekaar Podcast. Whether that is the only reason Slot’s odds have been dramatically slashed or whether there’s been a more concrete development behind the scenes is as yet unclear.

Who is Arne Slot?

The 44-year-old Dutchman currently manages Feyenoord who sit atop the Eredivisie at present. As such, convincing him to forego a title challenge in favour of a relegation scrap in England will require careful negotiation.

Feyenoord finished top of their Europa League group, albeit on goals scored after all four teams remarkably finished on eight points apiece. Slot would also be giving up a European knockout campaign if joining Leeds.

Slot previously managed AZ Alkmaar between 2020-21 and played for a variety of Dutch clubs during his playing days between 1995-2013.

During his time at AZ’s helm, Slot won 32 from a total of 58 matches, drawing 16 and losing only 10. He left the post with a +66 goal difference and his mark of 2.11 points per game is the highest in AZ’s history.

Slot was reluctantly sacked in late-2020 amid claims he wasn’t fully focused on the task at hand after agreeing a deal to join Feyenoord when the campaign concluded.

His preferred formation is 4-2-3-1 and if he does get the nod to succeed Marsch at Elland Road, he’ll be greeted by a familiar face in Luis Sinisterra.

The Colombian was a £21m summer signing from Feyenoord and bagged a remarkable 23 goals and 14 assists during Slot’s first season at the helm.

Expect Sinisterra to feature prominently and his form to pick up if Slot is appointed by the Leeds board.

Leeds’ caretaker boss is Michael Skubala who barring an imminent arrival, will be in charge for the trip to Old Trafford on Wednesday night.
