Cowboys QB Dak Prescott: Making progress with ankle rehab is 'like a drug for me'
It's been more than six months since a compound ankle fracture ended Dak Prescott's 2020 season. The Dallas Cowboys QB has been focused on rehabbing that injury ever since, and lately he's been loving it.
In an interview with USA Today, Prescott talked about how much progress he's been making with his rehab, and how much he's enjoying getting his legs under him again — literally.
“I don't even know if you can put into words the feeling throwing again,” Prescott told USA Today on Wednesday. “Not throwing sitting in a chair or throwing not moving, but actually dropping back and using your legs.
“It’s like a high. It’s like a drug for me.”
Prescott improving every day
Prescott has been following the guidance of the Cowboys coaches and trainers in his rehab, and he understands he needs to be patient with himself. But he said that he's making progress every single day.
“(I can) jump and then take off sprinting, stop again and then cut,” he said, speaking in partnership with Sleep Number. “I’m pretty close to doing everything. I’m doing everything, to be honest with you. It may not feel exactly the way I want it to just yet. But each and every day, I take another step and I’ll feel something tomorrow I didn’t feel today. So it’s been fun.”
Stephen Jones, Mike McCarthy thrilled with progress
With Prescott signing a four-year, $160 million contract with the Cowboys in March, the team is watching his rehab very closely. And thus far, they like what they're seeing.
“Where we sit now, I couldn’t be happier," executive vice president Stephen Jones said on Tuesday, via NFL Network's Jane Slater.
Head coach Mike McCarthy is also impressed with Prescott's discipline and dedication.
“I was able to watch him work Saturday,” McCarthy said via USA Today. “It was probably his most extensive work so far. He's throwing now, doing the footwork drills. He's made a lot of progress. Very disciplined in his regimen.
“He's here almost every day, so I'd say he's right on track or maybe a little ahead of schedule.”
Prescott being right on track — or even ahead of schedule — is exactly what Cowboys fans want to hear.
