NFL-National Football League roundup

Nov 20 (The Sports Xchange) - A case of the yips permeated the NFL on Sunday, with place-kickers misfiring at a record-setting pace. There were a combined 11 missed extra-point attempts in the first 11 games Sunday, breaking the previous NFL record of 10 that were (mis)hit on 10 occasions -- most recently in 1985. Two of the main culprits Sunday were Robbie Gould of the New York Giants and Mike Nugent of the Cincinnati Bengals, who failed to convert two apiece. According to the NFL, there were a total of eight missed PATs during the 2014 season and a combined 11 misses during the 2012 and 2013 seasons. The record still has a chance to grow with two games left to complete the weekend. - - - Rolando McClain was pegged as a starter at middle linebacker for the Dallas Cowboys before the season began but was instead suspended 10 regular-season games for a violation of the NFL's drug policy. Now he's facing another ban after reportedly missing a drug test. With his suspension set to expire Monday, McClain would have been eligible to report to work with teammates for the first time this season. Instead, McClain is expected to be banished for the rest of the season. - - - With rumors circulating that Tony Romo will have a new employer in 2017, the veteran quarterback is reportedly interested in playing for the Denver Broncos if the Dallas Cowboys decide to trade him. The 36-year-old Romo is officially a backup and said this week that rookie Dak Prescott deserves to be the starter for the 8-1 Cowboys. Romo has missed the first nine games of the season and is now recovered from an August back injury that opened the door for Prescott to become the starter. - - - Just 24 hours after his father was laid to rest in Oklahoma, Kansas City Chiefs long snapper James Winchester was back at Arrowhead Stadium and played against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Michael Winchester was shot and killed Tuesday afternoon in Oklahoma City in what was a revenge murder-suicide over a workplace dispute. - - - Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Cody Kessler was knocked out of Sunday's game against the Pittsburgh Steelers with no time remaining in the third quarter. Kessler, who was completing a pass to Corey Coleman, was taken to the locker room with a possible concussion when he was hit by Steelers linebacker Lawrence Timmons. Kessler also suffered a concussion against the Cincinnati Bengals on Oct. 23. - - - Cincinnati Bengals receiver A.J. Green tore his right hamstring on the third play from scrimmage against the Buffalo Bills at Paul Brown Stadium. Through nine games, Green has 66 catches for 964 yards and four touchdowns. - - - Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Brent Grimes suffered a quad injury vs. Kansas City Chiefs. Chiefs outside linebacker Dee Ford also suffered a hamstring injury. - - - Buffalo Bills leading rusher LeSean McCoy injured his left thumb while being tackled late in the first half after rushing for 33 yards on five carries and a touchdown. He did not return and reportedly will undergo surgery on a dislocated thumb. He isn't expected to miss next week's game. - - - Bengals receiver Robert Woods injured his knee, which appeared to bend awkwardly underneath him while being tackled. He walked to the locker room under his own power. Woods leads the team with 42 catches for 493 yards, including the three catches for 41 yards. He has one touchdown catch this season. - - - New York Giants wide receiver Roger Lewis Jr. was removed with an injury in the third quarter against the Chicago Bears. Bears tight end Zach Miller suffered a foot injury in the first half and was declared out for the rest of the game. Chicago also lost starting left guard Josh Sitton in the third quarter due to an ankle injury. (Editing by Andrew Both)
