NFL-National Football League roundup

Oct 10 (The Sports Xchange) - Denver Broncos coach Gary Kubiak left the hospital Monday afternoon but the team gave him the week off to recover from complex migraine condition. Special teams coordinator Joe DeCamillis will coach the team at San Diego on Thursday night. "He will be back (next) Monday," said John Elway, team president and general manager. Kubiak remained in a hospital Monday morning with flu-like symptoms as a precautionary measure following Sunday's 23-16 loss to the Atlanta Falcons. In 2013, Kubiak also became ill during a game against the Indianapolis Colts after suffering a mini-stroke at halftime and spent two nights in the hospital. - - - The Baltimore Ravens fired offensive coordinator Marc Trestman and replaced him with quarterbacks coach Marty Mornhinweg. Ravens head coach John Harbaugh decided to make a change, less than 24 hours after a 16-10 loss to the Washington Redskins. Trestman, the former head coach of the Chicago Bears who replaced Gary Kubiak after the 2014 season, lasted just 21 games with the Ravens, who are 3-2 this season. Through Sunday's games, Baltimore ranks in 23rd in points scored (18.8), 23rd in total yards (338.2) and 24th in third-down conversion (35.5 percent). - - - New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, showing little rust by throwing for 406 yards and three touchdowns after sitting out the first four games, says "I feel better now at 39 than I did when I was 29." The four-time Super Bowl champion returned on Sunday after serving a four-game suspension as part of the NFL's Deflategate punishment, going 28 of 40 in the Patriots' 33-13 win over the Cleveland Browns. Brady, in his 17th NFL season, turns 40 next August. "I know I've talked at length about how I've felt over the years and I feel better now at 39 than I did when I was 29 -- and I feel like it's due to a lot of things," Brady said on WEEI radio. - - - Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg had some harsh words for San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick and other NFL players for kneeling during the national anthem to protest violence against African Americans and other minorities. Speaking with Yahoo Global News, the 83-year-old Ginsburg shared her opinion on a variety of subjects, including those athletes taking a knee or sitting during the national anthem before games instead of standing. "I think it's really dumb of them," Ginsburg said. "Would I arrest them for doing it? No. I think it's dumb and disrespectful. I would have the same answer if you asked me about flag burning. I think it's a terrible thing to do but I wouldn't lock a person up for doing it." - - - Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones made it clear that Tony Romo will be the starting quarterback when he returns from his back injury. "Tony is our No. 1 quarterback," Jones said Sunday after the Cowboys' 28-14 win over the Cincinnati Bengals. Rookie Dak Prescott, starting in Romo's absence, has won four of the team's first five games. The fourth-round pick on Sunday found six different receivers, completing 18 of 24 passes for 227 yards and a touchdown without an interception. Prescott extended his NFL record to start a career without a pick to 155 attempts and is seven throws away from Tom Brady's overall record. He also ran for a 5-yard score early in the second quarter. - - - Josh McCown is back at practice in hopes of regaining the starting quarterback spot for the Cleveland Browns. McCown started Week 2 and finished the game despite a broken collarbone. He suffered the injury in the first half against the Baltimore Ravens and remained in the game. - - - The Tampa Bay Buccaneers placed running back Charles Sims on injured reserve with a knee injury before Monday night's game against the Carolina Panthers. The Bucs will have a full complement of running backs on the active roster against the Panthers after promoting Russell Hansbrough from the practice squad. However, Tampa Bay starting running back Doug Martin suffered a hamstring strain in the first quarter of the Week 2 game at Arizona and has not returned to the field. Martin was listed as doubtful for Monday night. Sims, 26, suffered a knee injury against the Denver Broncos on Oct. 2. - - - The Cleveland Browns were awarded offensive lineman Jonathan Cooper, two days after he was waived by the New England Patriots. Cooper was part of a huge offseason trade, acquired along with a second-round draft pick from the Arizona Cardinals for Pro Bowl defensive end Chandler Jones. The No. 7 overall pick of Arizona in 2013, Cooper suffered a foot injury early in training camp and never set foot on the field for New England. - - - The San Francisco 49ers signed cornerback JaCorey Shepherd to a two-year deal Monday after placing cornerback Chris Davis on injured reserve.
