NFL-National Football League roundup

Jan 29 (The Sports Xchange) - The New York Jets plan to hire New Orleans Saints wide receivers coach John Morton as their new offensive coordinator, according to multiple reports Sunday. Morton, 47, will replace 65-year-old Chan Gailey, who held the job for two years before announcing his retirement after the 2016 season. Jets coach Todd Bowles interviewed Morton and former Houston Texans offensive coordinator George Godsey for the job, according to ESPN. The Jets finished 26th in total offense and 30th in scoring this season. Morton, a 13-year NFL coach, spent the past two seasons with the Saints as receivers coach. He held the same position with the San Francisco 49ers under Jim Harbaugh from 2011-2014, and the 49ers went to three NFC Championship Games and one Super Bowl in that time. - - - Chris Ballard, the Kansas City Chiefs' director of football operations, will interview a second time for the Indianapolis Colts' general manager opening. Colts owner Jim Irsay will bring in Ballard for a second interview on Monday, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. Ballard came to the Chiefs in 2013, following 12 seasons with the Chicago Bears. Last week, the Colts released a list of six candidates to interview with Irsay for the team's GM job. Irsay fired general manager Ryan Grigson on Jan. 21, following a second consecutive season out of the playoffs. Irsay said Chuck Pagano will remain the team's head coach in 2017. The Colts wrapped up their first round of interviews, including with Seattle Seahawks co-player personnel directors Scott Fitterer and Trent Kirchner; Minnesota Vikings assistant GM George Paton; Green Bay Packers football operations director Eliot Wolf; and their in-house candidate, interim GM Jimmy Raye III. - - - The Los Angeles Rams are expected to hire Chris Shula as a defensive coaching assistant. Shula will join the staff of new Rams head coach Sean McVay, according to Alex Marvez of the Sporting News. Shula was a college teammate of McVay at Miami (Ohio). Shula is the grandson of the legendary coach Don Shula and his father is former Bengals head coach David Shula. (Editing by Andrew Both)
