NFL-National Football League roundup

Sept 19 (The Sports Xchange) - Offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels said on Monday morning that the New England Patriots were trying to determine how to proceed at quarterback after Jimmy Garoppolo suffered a right shoulder injury. The Patriots are down to rookie Jacoby Brissett as the only other quarterback on the active 53-man roster with Garoppolo suffering a sprained right AC joint in Sunday's 31-24 win against the Miami Dolphins. "I'm not sure exactly what the situation is going to be, I think a lot of that will be determined later today relative to Jimmy's whole situation and what it's going to be," McDaniels said on sports radio WEEI's 'Kirk and Callahan Show'. "I'm sure if he can't play or back up, then we'll be going through that process today." The Patriots have no plans at this time to add another quarterback before Thursday night's home game against the Houston Texans on a short week of preparation, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter. Although it may be a long shot, Garoppolo could still dress for the game as a No. 2 emergency option and run a limited portion of the offense if needed, according to ESPN. - - - The Cleveland Browns lost two games and lost two quarterbacks in the process. Robert Griffin III has a fractured bone in his left shoulder, an injury suffered in the season opener and is likely to miss three months. Josh McCown, who started the Week Two loss at home to the Baltimore Ravens, is going back to the sideline with a shoulder injury. McCown is not ready to commit to sitting, but if he cannot play, third-round pick Cody Kessler probably would be the starter for Game Three. Kessler was inactive in Week One as the third quarterback behind Griffin and McCown. - - - Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson suffered a torn meniscus in his right knee in Sunday night's 17-14 win over the Green Bay Packers. Vikings coach Mike Zimmer revealed the nature of the injury to radio station KFAN-FM but did not rule out his star running back for Sunday's game at the Carolina Panthers. "We're going through the evaluation process," Zimmer said. "Figuring out what the next (step is)." - - - San Diego Chargers running back Danny Woodhead will miss the rest of the season after MRI results revealed he tore the ACL in his right knee in Sunday's blowout win over the Jacksonville Jaguars. Woodhead's injury leaves the Chargers with just three healthy running backs -- Melvin Gordon, Kenneth Farrow and Andre Williams. - - - Green Bay Packers defensive tackle Letroy Guion suffered a knee injury in Sunday night's 17-14 loss to the Minnesota Vikings. Guion told ESPN after the game that he has a sprained medial collateral ligament. If the initial diagnosis holds up, he could miss multiple weeks. He was scheduled to undergo more tests on Monday. - - - Dallas Cowboys defensive end Randy Gregory has decided not to appeal a 10-game suspension for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy multiple times. Gregory will not be allowed to suit up until Week 15. In February, the league suspended Gregory for the first four games of this season for violating the league's drug policy. According to multiple reports, he failed another test in July, which resulted in the 10-game suspension. Reportedly, Gregory has spent time in rehab and was released earlier this month. - - - New Orleans Saints cornerback P.J. Williams suffered a concussion against the New York Giants on Sunday but is expected to be fine, according to reports. Williams, the Saints' 2015 third-round draft pick out of Florida State, suffered a neck injury on a first-quarter tackle of Giants tight end Larry Donnell with 6:15 left in the quarter. Williams' head made contact with Donnell's right knee. Then teammate Craig Robertson's leg hit Williams' head, causing his neck to whiplash a second time. Williams will follow the NFL's concussion protocol this week. - - - (Editing by Mark Lamport-Stokes)
