Steelers CB Justin Layne arrested on multiple charges near Cleveland

Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Justin Layne was arrested on multiple charges near his hometown of Cleveland on Friday, Willoughby Hill Police said via multiple outlets.

Layne, 23, faces charges of speeding, driving with a suspended license and improper handling of a firearm.

The third-year cornerback was pulled over at around 3 a.m. for allegedly speeding on Interstate 90 about 15 miles from the city, Melinda Roeder at KDKA Radio reported. Willoughby Hill Police Chief Matthew A. Naegele said Layne was clocked by police as going 89 mph in a 60-mph zone, Roeder said.

Naegele said Layne had an outstanding warrant for his arrest on a traffic violation for which he did not appear. Police also found he had a suspended license.

Marijuana allegedly was found in the Dodge Charger he was driving, but no drug charges were filed. Naegele said police spotted a 9 mm Glock handgun in the center console.

Two other men were in the car, but neither are facing charges. Naegele said after interviews with the trio at the scene, Layne was the person charged with the fourth-degree felony for improper handling of a firearm, Ray Fittipaldo of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported.

The Steelers are aware of the incident and gathering information, per Fittipaldo.

Layne is due in court later Friday. The 2019 third-round draft pick out of Michigan State has 25 tackles in 26 appearances over the past two seasons.
