NFL odds: Packers favored to beat Buccaneers and make first Super Bowl in 10 years

Aaron Rodgers will go into the NFC championship game in a rare position. He’s favored to win.

Rodgers will be at home for the NFC championship game against Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Rodgers has never started an NFC championship game at Lambeau Field. Many of his playoff losses have come on the road, like last season in the NFC championship game at the San Francisco 49ers.

The Packers are coming off a great season, they’re tough to beat at Lambeau Field, and BetMGM’s opening point spread reflects that.

Packers offense has been fantastic this season

The Packers opened as 4-point favorites over the Buccaneers at BetMGM. The line was released shortly after the Bucs’ 30-20 win over the New Orleans Saints in the divisional round. (The AFC championship game line was set after the Kansas City Chiefs’ win on Sunday.)

It’s a big spot for Rodgers. He’s 37 years old. The Packers drafted his presumed replacement, Jordan Love, in the first round of the 2020 NFL draft. He is one the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history but another trip to a Super Bowl has eluded him for a decade.

Rodgers and the Packers know that chances to play for a conference championship aren’t guaranteed. Especially at home. But they’ll go against a Buccaneers team led by a quarterback who knows a lot about playing on a big playoff stage.

Tom Brady is back in a conference title game

Tom Brady will be playing in his 14th conference championship game. That’s more than any other two quarterbacks combined. Joe Montana is second to Brady with seven conference championship starts, and no other quarterback has more than six.

The Buccaneers played very well down the stretch, particularly on offense. The defense came up big on Sunday against New Orleans, forcing four turnovers. Still, the Packers’ offense was one of the NFL’s best all season and Green Bay looked very good in beating the Los Angeles Rams in the divisional round. It’s no surprise the Packers are favored to beat the Bucs.

The Buccaneers know they can beat the Packers, having done so 38-10 on Oct. 18. The Packers were 2-point favorites for that game in Tampa Bay and took a 10-0 lead, but Tampa Bay outscored them 28-0 in the second quarter. Rodgers threw no touchdowns and two interceptions in his worst game of the season.

Two legendary quarterbacks will be facing off with a berth in Super Bowl LV on the line. Rodgers might never have a better chance to make it back to the NFL’s biggest stage.
