Report: Retired QB Alex Smith considering broadcasting career, has 4 networks interested
Former Washington Football Team and Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith called it a career in April, retiring after 16 years in the NFL and one year after his inspiring comeback from a devastating leg injury. While his playing days are behind him, he may not be leaving the game behind just yet.
Andrew Marchand at the New York Post reported on Wednesday that Smith is considering moving into broadcasting, and four different networks are interested in him as an analyst. Smith recently had auditions with CBS Sports and Fox and meetings with ESPN and NFL Network, according to Marchand. And at least one of the auditions went pretty well.
One person who saw Smith’s audition thought he had “No. 2 or 3 game analyst” potential if he is into it.
CBS is reportedly considering filling the analyst spot that opened up when they decided not to bring back Rich Gannon after the 2020 season. However, "the network does not feel as if it has to add someone," according to Marchand. Fox is looking to find someone to plug into their No. 5 spot, which had been occupied by Chris Spielman until he left to work for the Detroit Lions.
Smith isn't the only person CBS is looking at. Marchand reported that the network also brought in former quarterback Mark Sanchez, former wide receiver Joey Galloway, and former linebacker Sean Lee to audition. Sanchez and Galloway currently work as analysts for ESPN, while Lee just retired in April.
Smith has another option
If broadcasting doesn't work out for Smith — Marchand reported that Sanchez is looked at as having "a little more personality" in the booth — he does have at least one more option to return to football without putting on his pads and cleats again.
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid, who coached Smith for five years in Kansas City, told the Kansas City Star just days after Smith announced his retirement that he'd already texted Smith to offer him a job.
“He’s just a heck of a person, had a great career, played so many years here with different teams and everywhere he went, he made them better,” Reid said. “I texted him a while back if he gets back into coaching, I get first dibs on him. I doubt he will, but if he decides to go that route, he would be a guy that you’d love to have on your staff.
“But he is really a special, special person. He’ll go down is one of my all-time favorites.”
